Kinesis/probikekit warranty update - 8 days after confirming the warranty has been approved I still don't have a replacement frame. Called PBK yesterday and they're looking into it, apparently. Estimated shipping date is still showing as yesterday on PBK's site...

Further warranty update - I spoke to Kinesis yesterday who confirmed they'd sent the frame out to PBK as soon as they'd approved the warranty (back around 22nd/23rd August). Called PBK again today and the chap told me they'd not received it yet. Spoke to Kinesis who said they'll chase PBK and get them to send it out asap. Got the guy to reluctantly agree to get it shipped out next day rather than standard shipping as soon as it does turn up but he's maintaining that it's not there yet...
So... 9 days since the warranty claim was approved and the frame was reordered and still no sign of it.
Kinesis thus far have been really helpful, but PBK (whilst being friendly and polite) have been utterly useless. I will never buy anything from them ever again, it's just not worth the hassle.

I think I got mine from Merlin, and they too where really slow when I needed them to send me the parts that where missing on the box.
Hope that you'll get back on the saddle soon!! :(

Fingers crossed! Just got home to find an email from pbk saying it's been dispatched and should be delivered tomorrow! If all goes well I've got a weekend of bike building to look forward to :)
Also, sorry for filling your build thread with my kinesis/pbk problems, but hopefully it'll help people in future to avoid pbk (but not kinesis, they've been good!).
Oh yeah, will be a build with doval rings too, excited about trying them out :)

Good news! The frame finally turned up on Saturday evening, spent the rest of the weekend building it up.
Turned out kinesis have changed the position of the front mudguard attachment points on the inside of the fork so I had to wait until tonight to bend new mudguard stays to fit. Due to the rain this morning and no mudguard I haven't had a chance to ride it yet, so tomorrow's commute will be the shakedown ride... I've raised the stem a little, as I'll be moving to herts soon and this'll entail a 28 mile each way commute, so will see how I get on with it. Got a 130mm I might chuck on there if it feels a little short.
Edit: granny ring fail

I'm happy you finally got it sorted out, even it if took you a lot of waiting and emailing :(. Don't push to hard on that Doval until you adjust to it :) using the middle position of the 5 to choose its a nice start.
-
• #83
Yeah, gone for the middle position for now. I like the reminder printed on the chainring to take 20mg of glucose after riding :)
And thanks! Glad to have a geared bike again. And sorry again for filling up your build thread. How's your kinesis going by the way?

how are you finding the fake smp?
-
• #85
It's good so far, I did a quick post on the smp thread (or orient express thread?) about it. It's the 'chaunts' fake padded smp. I've got a carbon one but it just about split me in two.
I only rode the padded one for a week or so before the old kinesis broke, but enjoyed it for that week. I'll carry on using it and get it perfectly adjusted over the next few weeks before my big commutes start and will do an update when I've got a proper opinion on it. Thus far comfier than Romin and Romin evo for me though!

Mine has been in service for about a month now and I'm loving it. My build was delayed because I was supplied with a faulty caliper initially so couldn't bleed the front brake.
Went for Hunt 4season disc wheels with 28mm Conti 4 Seasons and it makes for a very smooth ride. Frame looks beautiful in the blue and is staying that way thanks to a set of matt 35 bleumels
The 685/805 brakes and shifters work fantastically well but I have found the hood shape is a bit lumpy without careful wrapping. The rest of the running gear is ultegra stuff I took off the old bike along with the cockpit, saddle etc.
Great fun to ride and the hydraulics are a revelation in power and feel.

Any pics? Discs really are a revelation eh? Interesting you got 28s to fit under bluemel 35s. I went for the 45 longboards, maybe should've sized down...

I need to take some nice ones this weekend.
The 28s fit fine actually, no issues at all. This might be to do with the wide rims. They come up with a nice rounded profile and at about 70psi are spot on for me. -

Rotors are 160mm TRP that came with the Spyre's but soon the rear will be a 140mm because they fucked up the frame design or the welding and it has just a 1mm clearance with the chainstay. At least they are sending a 140mm adaptor so I can try that option...
@bertocq Is there any reason other than clearance not to run 160mm at the back?
-
• #91
Nope.
-
• #92
160/160 installed using V-brake spacers.
-
• #93
If clearance is not an issue with your frame, go for it :). Mine is impossible to be run with 160 (and I tried with two differente rear wheels and 160 discs)
Anyway I got not issues with 140 in the rear on rain/snow and fully loaded up.
-
• #94
Your frame is bigger than mine though, how can you still have clearance issues?
I'm using a flat-mount caliper w/ v-brake bolts so don't use an adapter. Maybe that's where the problem lies?
-
• #95
I put 140mm on the rear of my (55.5cm) 4S disc, as that's what they recommend on the Kinesis website. The rs805 caliper is mounted directly, without any adaptor (but I did have fun working out that the length specified on the bolts referred to the thickness of the frame where the bolt passes through, and NOT the length of the bolt)
I weigh 90kg, and 160mm front & 140mm rear hasn't failed to stop me yet.

The brake caliper has nothing to do with the clearance, if you see the picture it's not present. The problem relies with the disc distance to the chainstays. At first I thought it was my rear hub but after trying another wheelset I found out it was not.
Then I asked kinesis and they just sent me a 140 rotor for free :/, I think the welding are to blame here... that and the guy that designed the frame and put on the website initially that 160 rotors where ok.. then changed it to 140... last Kinesis for me.

@bertocq
Sorry if I confused you - merely wanted to compare mounting methods to those used by @hippy.
It would appear that, whilst you were initially bowled a swerve ball by Kinesis, they came up with the goods, by providing a replacement rotor in the appropriate size. I don't mind companies making mistakes, too much, if they address the issue in an honest and agreeable manner - so I wouldn't write them off so quickly (but that's just my opinion) -
• #98
I don't know what the issues are but my 160/160 setup worked fine for TABR. Biggest issue was probably packing the bike with the bigger rotor touching the bars in the bike box. Think I might take a cassette tool to remove rotors next time.

• #99
Whoa was thinking about one of these but maybe not now. Has anyone else's frame failed? Also are they bolt through or regular qr?
-
• #100
My warranty replacement is still going strong some 3000mi later, no further issues at all and enjoying it very much :)
Oh and it's regular QR front and rear.
Measure stack and reach on your current bike and then compare those figures with your intended new bike.
