That bored lifeguard thing was all over Reddit as "Most pointless job ever" etc.
Just because they're olympic swimmers doesn't mean they are immune to getting in trouble in the water. Do the other swimmers know CPR? Unpredictable stuff happens all the time. Seems completely reasonable to have lifeguards present.
