• Cant you just get a 12-29 cassette?

  • I know that is probably true, but I'm risk-averse following injured knee back in March and would rather just have the bail out gear just in case.

Plus I hate swapping cranksets between bikes.

  • I'm on sram, does shimano or sram do that ratio and would I need a long cage mech?

Edit: is a 10 speed bike

  • You could get the 'wi-fli' kit or the 11-30 cassette and a long cage mtb mech

I have a compact rival PM and the cassettes / mechs kicking around as it happens #boastpost #stupidthigsinboxesnotbeingused

  • Yeah I'll probably end up going down that route, just a bit of faff.

If you're not using your compact PM you should give it to me. Will rep in return.

  • would I need a long cage mech?

Mid cage MTB RD is the way to go for SRAM 10-speed. You only need the long cage for triples. Might even get away with short cage if you're not going full dinner plate on the big sprocket.

  • Why MTB over the road wifli ones?

  • You get nice stuff like cagelock, type2 and a less goofy cable entry point. And a mid-size cage, whereas I think the wifli ones are long or nothing.

That said, the wifli ones are a straight swap, whereas with mtb you'll need to trip your cables and housing down, and you lose a barrel adjuster.

  • I see. I have no idea what cagelock and type2 mean but they sound impressive. Think I'll just get a wifli for minimum fuss, and a 12-32 cassette. Thanks

  • But what about sundridge?

  • Why MTB over the road wifli ones?

What he said, plus the 36T sprocket option because why not? Compared with the old 6-speed touring blocks, which were fine, the jumps on a 12-36 10-speed are smaller on the middle 6 and you get 2 extra gears at each end

  • I have my rad fixie for that.

  • This. I spent a week there with 42x28 as my lowest year and didn't have any problems...

  • How many skid patches?

  • What @andyp said - I'm a fat sprinter and I'd happily go back to Mallorca with 39x28. Not sure I'd want a 25.. but then I don't give a shit about being fast uphill.

  • Single speed for me this year in Mallorca. 48x23. Let's hope my knees are up to it...

  • Why would you do that?

  • Well, I did the last four days of last year's Mallorca trip using only one gear - 34x17. And that included Sa Calobra and Puig Major. So why not? Makes life more interesting.

It helps that we only really do the mountains. Any long sections would be a bit spinny with that gearing.

  • One of my friends rode 51X21/16 fixed a month ago on Mallorca and enjoyed himself.

  • I love climbing on the fixed gear. Just mind, heart, and legs. I've done most of the major local stuff (HC stuff) on the fixed.

But I cant get very far fixed. When I'm out on the road bike, theres a sense of freedom brought about by knowing I can ride several hundred kms, With the right pace and enough apple pie.

Depends what you're doing in Mallorca I Guess.

  • Just sounds like a really good way of ruining a nice week of cycling to me. Why not just take a road bike and stick to one gear on climbs?
Each to his own I suppose...

  • Anyone interested in my Powertap track rear wheel, which is a 50mm carbon clincher, with a matching front rim (not built onto a hub)?

  • Price? And what would be the situation regarding head unit? Ant+ or would I need to find a CycleOps unit?

  • ANT+ or get the Bluetooth cap, at which point it transmits in, well - you can probably guess.

Price - it's a G3 Powertap track with a splined sprocket, built to a 50mm FarSports rim with CX-rays, and the matching unbuilt front rim. The rear is well used, but looked after.

    £400?

  • Very tempted. I'll get back to you. I've just bought a set of 50mm carbon track wheels, but they're going to have to go back but I'm having grief with the shop and it looks like I'm going down PayPal dispute route. If that gets resolved, I get my money back and you manage to return these wheels, these'd be excellent for me.
