I don't have a K-Edge mount to mod so L-bend cables are the cheaper option.

My old and untrusty Edge 705 has finally gone to the glitchy home in the sky.
What's the best offering to replace it? I understand that the new 820 is just out but their 'social' cycling innovations seem pretty wank, so in that case am I better getting the 1000 or 810? I've read reviews for both and seems that the 1000 performs better but the battery life is abysmal.
Using courses on my 705 was fine when it actually bothered working so I'm not needing the moon on a stick, more interested in usability and most importantly, non glitchy, reliable performance... Any users on here care to share their thoughts?

Will garmin recovery advisor come to older models via firmware update?

What is the best way to get EU maps on my Garmin 810. I have a trip planned to ride from Faro to Malaga and would like to you the navigation function.
-

Get maps here http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
Choose either whole countries or individual tiles. For you individual tiles probably best rather than choosing spain and portugal.

Wow thank you. How does this differ from the maps that come with the navigation bundle? Is there a big difference in quality?
-
• #3661
Generally these maps are better than garmin maps, not too sure which bundle you are referring to if it is the usial one with city navigator europe on it, you probably do not need additional maps as the area you want is probably covered.
-
• #3662
Yes I was referring to the city navigator Europe maps. But since my Garmin wasn't the 'navigation' bundle I don't think it has any EU maps on it at all.
My Garmin 810 should be arriving this week. I will try and load the maps you provided.
thanks!!

Here is a guide that may help as well using the same resource @freezing77 pointed you too.

@inkleined I used that guide last week and successfully loaded maps for the whole of the UK to my 810

I find address search is a bit shonky with the non-official maps. Fine if you're following routes you've already made or you've already added places as waypoints/POI but not always great for searching.
-

OSM does not fully support post code search, but I find that on device routing is a very poor option due the garmins inbuilt algorithm that can send you on some very long and seemingly uneccessary detours.

I've also purchased an Elemnt. Planned a little ride last night and rode it this morning using the Elemnt to navigate.
Initial impressions are favourable. Screen is good, on unit functions are simple and reasonably intuitive. It's big compared to my Garmin 500 but the comparable Garmin units are big as well.
Following a route created in rwgps was straightforward. Turns are indicated 250m in advance with countdown, plus your onward route is shown on the map as an arrowed track. Some quirks noted:
some turns were billed as "turn right" when they were blatantly left and visa versa, I expect this is something to do with the waypoints in rwgps;
Occasionally the map was slow to re-centre so I was cycling along at the edge of the screen. As a navigation tool to follow a pre planned route, it definitely works. You'd have to try hard to get lost. It's easy to zoom in/out in the route view which is handy.
After a 2 hour ride, battery was down from 100 to 80% so I expect this to have sub 10 hour useable capacity.
In my view there are two areas where this unit is considerably ahead of Garmin; connectivity and smart phone app.
On the first point, it synchronises with all known training apps, has wifi and Bluetooth and pairs with your phone and any sensors that I've heard of so excellent compatibility.
All the set up and settings are managed via the smart phone app which is 100x easier than clicking through menus on a Garmin. Surely Garmin must adopt this model as it's so obvious?
Overall, I like it. Not perfect, but a significant step forward IMO.

Could anyone advise in which the best Garmin watch is for running, aswell as cycling?
I currently have a hand me down Vivofit which does not record cycling activity at all.
Cheers.

My Edge 810 no longer charge/connect, brought Elmnt, gonna send the 810 to warranty, get replacement model and sell 810.
What great about the Elmnt, is that Wahoo not selling new product every years or so, they improved the software while keeping the same model.
The Elmnt have more improvement in it's short lifespan than a typical Garmin cycling GPS did in their.

Have you checked the cable?
I think I prefer my ghetto mod
