  • ahh well the paint wasnt to remain perfect and now you indeed can just ride it. shit story, but life. great biek btw. very 'gram.;)

  • nice build dammit

  • looks like a complete re-paint

You should strip it and polish, cant go wrong then.

  • Due I think to magic the marks are fading out.

    Not a clue why.

Rode my favourite route outside Winchester today, the KAAD12 feels just like my old System Six, but with more grip, more comfort and better brakes.

  • That's good news about the paint.

  • Helicopter tape?
Are the marks under where the tape/strap was or either side of where the tape/strap was?

  • If the marks are fading out would surely be UV light fading issue?
The straps would have shielded the the sections that were covered from UV rays, and now it is evening itself out?

  • It's odd, the area where the discolouration appeared was under the tape, but where the tape (which was old and a bit shit) didn't stick down. It wasn't under the straps. It looks to me as if the non-stuck down tape (which is clear) formed some kind of lense, maybe. It's now fading back out again with the new, non-shit, stuck down fully tape. Odd.

  • Deffo got something to do with UV IMHO.

  • That makes perfect sense.

  • A good warning of how careful you should be leaving it direct sunlight for even a small amount of time.

    P.S.
    Told you so!

  • I think this will actually look better faded. It'll look like a more genuine trompe l'oeil of an original klein - it'll be a better fake.

  • Still think you missed a trick not capturing Chutney in those photos, would break Pokemon Go and the interwebz :)

did you get that route off of Tim BTW?

  • I don't mind the fading (which it has done some of already), I think it'll show that it's used rather than a wall-hanger. Age scars us all, wearing them with pride is the trick I think.

I tried a different route, which was decidedly sub-optimal, this is one I've come up with based on Tim's one: https://www.strava.com/routes/5774920

I'll be trying that soon - let me know if you fancy it, would be an early start on a Saturday with the goal of getting to Winchester by noon.

  • Sounds like a good Clubrun/smash up/train beers ride that one.

I shall ask Tim if he has any tweaks

  • Solvent and or (age-degraded) plasticiser in the tape adhesive sparingly miscible with the differently solvented topcoat!

Did the top/clear coat of the bike paint have a solvent?
Was it oven-cured to hasten the curing process?

  • First world problems

  • Is much fun.

  • Is it all working happily now?

    It looks fucking awesome.

  • It's working perfectly, quite a lot of people on the ride today commented positively on the paint, most of whom recognised it as "maybe something to do with Klein?", which was really nice.

The cassette also surprises a lot of people, plenty of "what on earth is that?!", then they spot the single ring.

I can honestly say that for todays ride (Ride100, incorporating Leith and Box hill) I never once wished to have a double chainring/conventional setup, and the gaps between gears are only noticeable when you are going into a strong headwind and want to balance your effort very precisely - which you soon get over using the ever popular "grin and bear it" approach.

Big fan of the Schwalbe Pro-One tyres, tubeless seems to be working well, I was passing much heavier riders on the straights of the descents when we were both tucked, which I am putting down to rolling resistance (and maybe a bit of frontal area).

The ENVE on DT Swiss are great wheels, stiff and light.

I'm also a fan of the XTR gear-display, how could you not like something that tells you when you've shifted into 11th?

  • What a nice bike.

  • Thanks!

I have to say I love it, it's exactly what I wanted it to be.

    Complete build is as follows:

56cm CAAD12 disc frame and fork
    ENVE 29er XC rims on
DT Swiss 240S hubs, 9mm bolt-thru RWS front, conventional QR rear, ceramic bearings, with
Schwalbe Pro-One tyres, run tubeless with sealant
    SRAM XX1 10-42 cassette
Wolf Tooth 50T drop-stop ring (with 44T SRAM CX1 to go on for Rockies)
    XTR Di2 rear mech
XTR Di2 gear indicator/front junction box
    R-785 hydraulic brake levers/Di2 shifters
Flat mount rear, post mount front R-785 brakes with XT 160mm rotors
175 mm SiSl cranks with Power2Max Type-S 110 bcd spider, ceramic bearings
Speedplay Ti pedals (Ward rather than Speedplay axles)
    3T Arx Pro 120mm stem
    3T Rotundo LTD 42cm bars
    Cinelli Caleido tape
    Tilquist garmin mount
    Fake SMP carbon saddle
Hylix 25.4 carbon post, with 3T clamping kit as the kit that came with the post was fit only for the bin

I think that's it, the only job I have left is to collect the bag of spares/unused parts from Soho and to put two quick-links in the chain in order that I can swap between rings easily (or, rather, more easily than would be the case with having to break and shorten/lengthen the chain each time).

  • put two quick-links in the chain in order that I can swap between rings easily (or, rather, more easily than would be the case with having to break and shorten/lengthen the chain each time).

If only there was a solution for having two rings at the front. Maybe some mechanism to switch easily between them...

Kidding aside, this turned out very cool. Not something I would come up with, but cool nonetheless.

  • R-785 hydraulic brake levers/Di2 shifters

Can you change gear from either leaver?
