  • I've used the £40 ones off eBay for the last four years.

  • Thanks I'll take a punt. Aerojacket is either from Bike.Science or some shop in CA so eBay seems the only option.

  • Got mine here: http://www.wheelbuilder.com/aerodisc.html

Maybe I should sell mine? Powertap+808+Aerojacket. Makes a nice spare wheel though.

  • Shocking scenes at the Reading CC 50 this morning with a certain Maidenhead tester observed riding a machine with variable gears.

Felt like tough day to me - good to meet @Sam too.

  • ... a certain Maidenhead tester observed riding a machine with variable gears.

    #thanksBrexit

  • Was on track for 300 miles up to 16h and then went bang. Stomach stopped processing food, all blood was being diverted to the legs. Had no choice but to stop and sleep for 90 minutes to let the body sort itself out. Pushed on once I'd done that but was still struggling, finished reasonably strong though. Loads of time off the bike (5h maybe).

GPS says ~294m, final timekeeper had me down as 282m. I think they may be missing one of my QB laps (I was very erratic and often stopped for long periods at the no-support tent). I'm sure it'll all get sorted out, I'll wait for the official results whilst also counting the various loops from my GPS track and submit a claim if the two don't tally.

Made tonnes of mistakes, but that's good. Feeding was the big problem. I knew the 24 cafe was shut overnight but should have planned more properly. Thinking it was shut 10-6 and so I aimed there for 8.30pm only to find it was actually shutting 8-6 didn't help.

67" was probably the right gear choice given my lack of training, low target and poor execution. Could really have done with a freewheel and gears but that's not the point.

Organisation was fantastic, as were the volunteers, and LOADS of support from all the rides and their supporters.

#11 when the photos go up, look for the LFGSS cap.

Broadwith won again but not as far as his ride last year, so Andy's record is safe.

  • Reprepreprep

  • That's still an astounding achievement! Much respect

  • Just put the TCX files into Strava and counted the laps and the paper distances add to 294.mumble so it should get fixed.

Club record too - fixed and outright - (it's a running club that has had sporadic CTT affiliation and in a trawl of the previous Mersey Roads I couldn't find anyone else who'd ridden under the name of the club).

    100m in ~6:37, 180km (IM cycle) in 7:25.

3:24:18 not moving. What could have been...

  • Well done Greenbank, 24 hrs are no fun when you feel good but with all the problems you had and on a low gear that was a good ride.

Rob Bullyment our rider was going well on his schedule he was on 86" fixed 100 miles in 5h30m 12 hours 245miles and it really looked like our Catford CC Club record of 463miles 508yards from 1952 was in his grasp but I think the afternoons heat had taken it's toll on everyone, all seemed to suffer in the night by 7am he was on 346miles with six 1/2 hours to go. I have just had a text he has provisionally ridden 462miles never have I been so amazed and disappointed at the same time that is a phenomenal recovery in the last six hours but I really hope they find that extra one mile 508yards in the official check, he is so close to the record!

Michael Broadwith had a proper wobble in the night we were right next to his helpers he complained feeling shit at 1:00am but they pepp talked him in to continuing, by the morning he was twenty mins down on his schedule but started to claw it back so he did well under the circumstances.
I will post a link to my photos once up.

  • Massive respect @Greenbank. Well done!

  • I really hope they find that extra

I've just been for dinner with him (and Richard and Chris). The second set of provisional results give him the record by a few hundred yards.

  • 463.62 well done Rob. And you @Greenbank.

  • Time off the bike is killer. Well done for having a crack. Might we see you there again next year... ?

  • Will depend on brownie points and school term dates but probably yes (and I'm saying that not much more than 24h after finishing.)

Having done it once and seen how it all works I've got a huge list of things I'd do differently.

    I'd need:-

    • A bigger gear (high 70s probably, would like to aim for 600km and possibly even 400 miles)
    • More time in the saddle (and aerobars) in the run up to it
    • Some proper training (quelle horreur)
    • Less weight (supposed to have been 10kg lighter by now)

Still unsupported (at least throughout the night) but would get my stomach used to carb drink so stops would be minimal.

  • I was sat on a chair, 250m after the finish line of my first one saying "we're doing this again next year". You set goal, miss goal, go back smash goal, set new goal, smash new goal, then start failing so change goals completely. :)

    • I don't consider the course lumpy so I would use a bigger gear than you had if I was silly enough to ride fixed.

    • Time in bike is invaluable.

    • As above

    • Are you calling me fat?

You should train on the 'food' you are going to use in the race. As you now know, digestion becomes a big issue.

  • The battlefield leg is undoubtedly 'lumpy' - tricky on fixed, I would imagine.

  • Some good photos that my mate Will took, here:

    http://goog.gl/QGFuTi

  • battlefield? You mean the bit after the turn after Tern Hill? The bit under the trees after the 'other' RAB? I wish I could remember the names.

  • No - the new bit for this year. We went out along the A49, in the direction that the QB circuit comes back from, for about 13.5 miles, then back. Then later on we had to do it again. Irritatingly there were a couple of mountains en route...

  • Ah that sucks. Is it a temporary or permanent change?

  • Temporary due to roadworks on the Espley leg south of the Hodnet roundabout so they cut that loop short at Hodnet RAB and needed a different loop to throw people out on.

This year the legs were easily identifiable:-

    Battlefield:

    • New
    • Col du Whatever-it-was
    • Almost Peak District-esque in views

    Espley (cut short at Hodnet):-

    • big pothole I never successfully avoided just before the single carriageway wiggly bit through the cattle farm on the way back
    • at night a couple of kids jumping out to scare riders just after Hodnet on the way back
    • green glowstick lost in the middle of the road where it thinned down to single carriageway
    • broken down milk tanker opposite the Castle Inn
    • The Mersey Beatles performing at the Tern Hill Hotel

    Quina Brook:

    • fly tipping first left just after time keeper
    • barking dog at a house with three sheep in a very thin roadside enclosure
    • orange glove on roadside on the run in to Prees Island - hello glove

    [EDIT] Finishing circuit:-

    • That climb up to the pub
    • That badger - ugh
    • The support everywhere

I needed lots of distractions to occupy my mind for that long. Those are the things that stuck in my head.

  • 580 yards I think, fantastic ride by Rob.

Everyone that finishes deserves a medal :)
