i don't think he's justifying the fee, he seems as 'mystified' as everyone else (ie he knows why the fee is so high but doesn't want to admit it).
BUT I think there are a lot of very poor people that don't care who is labour leader, because they've got far more pressing things to worry about, like affording rent and food.
I'm not saying he's JC or anything, but he isn't DC. Just an out of touch old MP doing his best.
