However, everything does seem to be moving towards the bikepacking stuff, and it would mean losing 500g of weight of the rack too. There's no single simple answer...
You have to stop to get into any saddle pack so it doesn't really matter what it is. I find my Revelate very quick to use (roll closure + clip each side) to say grab a jacket out of but a bit less so when you're scrounging around for something small. I now keep my smaller items up front.
A rackpack is a reasonable compromise. Still lots of space and quite accessible (unlike some of the bike packing saddle bags).
