  • I'm looking for advice on a watch as a graduation gift. Budget is <£1000, looking for something likely classy and most likely a dress watch as per the special occasion. Would prefer to avoid a bracelet.
Sorry for how vague that is, I literally have no idea where to start!

  • Max Bill... Next! 😉

  • My olds hinted at a graduation gift...

    I got many excite.

A fat little porcelain figurine (me) wearing said mortar.

    Tuch.

  • Well now I feel even more spoilt than I did already!
    @>>>>>> that's gorgeous, good start

  • You could easily get a nice used Omega (or even a Tudor if you're lucky) dress watch for that... Lots of choice...

Those Max Bills are lovely tho'...

  • MeisterSinger worth a look?

  • Nah.

@>>>>>> is correct. Max Bill or vintage Omega.

    Some nice Omega's here: http://goo.gl/K0cLrG

  • Bill Max ain't dressy enuf. #JustSayin

  • Longines Legend?

  • That is indeed The Sex

  • Never heard of a olex

  • Longines Legend

After looking at the Max Bill for quite some time, I thought this looked too busy. I've had a bit more of a google though and it is lovely.

  • Was only joking about Max Bill.

It depends what works best tbh. Meistersinger / Max Bill bit more 'studio' minimal.

The Longines hints towards JLC 'balls out' manlux.

You might need big hairy arms...

  • My slender hairless wrists might be crying out for the opposite.
When I'm looking at this kind of price point I should be looking at automatic/manual right? Not quartz. I'm an electronic engineer and love the idea of something working without any electricity at all. The bastard stuff is everywhere.

  • Steinhart Ocean 1 Vintage

Anyone got any thoughts on that versus the Ocean 1 Vintage Red?

I believe the latter is the poor man's Submariner but I saw the former on their website and am intrigued.

  • Prefer the former.

  • The Max Bill never came to fruition for many reasons (1st world problems), and now I'm paying an obscene amount of money for a wedding, the watch fund is severely depleted.

  • @Dammit you have a Steinhart, right? And I'm assuming others on this thread have owned one?

Versus a "cheap" Seiko automatic, what is the benefit of a Steinhart? Is there actually a boost in quality or am I just paying more for better design?

  • I just received the my Vintage Red about 2 weeks ago. Very pleased. I really strongly considered the Ocean One vintage as well, but it's a bit too much like another watch I own. It came down to personal preference for me.

  • What's the other watch?

  • Swiss made, they've got an ETA movement in them, the quality is good and the price is great... No brainer...

I seriously haven't taken mine off since it arrived...

  • Or you could argue:

Japanese made, they've got an in-house movement in them, the quality is good and the price is great... No brainer...

Personally I'd go for an equivalently priced Seiko as they're not just a copy of something else.
