  • Just a generic cheapo set off the bay, 15 quid all in or so, not the best quality for sure, but adds to the aesthetic imho

  • I think Kinlin XR380 aka Halo Caliber come in 16H. Alloy, but not particularly light ☺

  • Home bike painting is fun.

  • So I noticed this crack on the chainstay on my beloved raleigh record. It was covered in mud and behind the crank so I hadn't noticed it for what I presume was while. Its pretty bad...

I also noticed another one on the head tube whilst cleaning it up.

This was all a bit of a shock, I've never had a crack before and never done anything that I would have thought would cause a crack and hence am looking for advice.
So The bike is 501 reynolds, so my thinking was to just take it to a welder (arranged for tomorrow) who could weld it up. I just wanted to know whether there was anything I should know/do as I've never had to deal with a crack before.

TDLR: any advice for welding up cracks?

  • Shit those are big cracks, were you riding it like that?! Is the frame worth repairing? If it's cracked that much I'd be worried that it would happen in other places too. Might be time for a new frame

  • time for a new frame

^This. It's not economic to repair.

  • Must have been riding on it like that for some amount of time as I stopped riding it when I saw the cracks.
The sentimental value of the frame is too great to through away. So far the welder has quoted £30 but hasn't seen it yet.

Buying a new bike would be the proper thing to do.

    Edit: @mdcc_tester
£37-£50 (repair and paint) would be reasonable no? Unless there are more things to do than this.

  • Maybe get something new to ride and keep that one to hang on the wall or something? I mean you can get something half decent for £50 on here if you wait it out

  • Pic didn't upload on the Bermondsey pic, failed again here, will try later https://instagram.com/p/BHXrudPgXq8/

  • Don't get a non-cycling welder to try to fix a brazed frame, it will just get worse instead of better. The proper repair is a tube replacement, which will be £100 + paint if done by somebody who actually knows what they are doing, and that's just the stay. Same again for the head tube.

  • Got this up and running today, needs black hoods and tilting the bars down. Saving up for some nice wheels.

  • Ok, sounds like no fun. Will keep eyes peeled though.

  • now that's a compact bar. sweet Koga.

  • Even though it's not economic to repair, if it's sentimental to you and you can justify spending the money, then go ahead and get it fixed!
