• Slight update in the watch search.

    Firstly, this:

It's my grandfather's old watch. The strap is a bit ropey, the glass is scratched, and it has sat unused for about 30 years so it could do with a thorough service, but it seems to work perfectly and is keeping time well (no obvious change in past 24hrs). I think it's pretty smart so I could use it infrequently as a dress watch.

Secondly I tried on a few watches in town. Most shops I visited had very similar selections inc. Tissot, Seiko etc. but it was hard to find many of the watches I liked from the suggestions above. I tried a visodate but it looked very dressy in person and I wasn't a huge fan. I couldn't find either a Seiko SKX007 or Steinhart Ocean Black but I tried a SKA371P1 and although I wasn't 100% I think it was my favourite watch of the day... unfortunately however, it was vetoed by my GF who appears to have something against the bezel on diver style watches.

I think the only watch we both liked was a Citizen Eco-Drive titanium. However, I wanted something automatic... This may be a misplaced desire, especially since I don't know much about watches but the salesman failed to convince me about the eco-drive mechanism.

I'd like to find somewhere I could try some of the SARB varieties... I like the SARB033, and although I don't like the leather strap on the SARB017 I saw a picture where it looked good with a metal bracelet as well as Nato type straps.

  • Very nice. You shouldn't need to service it like you say, if you are just wearing rarely as a dress watch.
