So I'd like to get an easier gear out of my bike for those hills here. Running Ultegra 6700 compact with 50/34 in front and 11-28 on the back, Ambrosio hub.
Weighing up my options.a) Get a 12-30T casette (i think that fits, A$ 65)
b) Get a full 6800 groupset and change over (A$ 750)
c) Get SRAM Force 22 groupset (A$ 950)Thoughts?

Ah yep that's the thread I was thinking of. Thanks.

how does going 11 speed help you? still going to have a maximum of 34x28 ?

Buy a triple, grandad.

Well, both, 6800 and Force22 have a rear mid size derailleur that goes up to 32 on the back I think?
-

Makes sense.
Would be cheaper to just go up to 32 with new cassette and read derailleur. if theres nothing wrong with your 6700 anyway.

You'll want the wifli for anything over 28 on Force 22, and Mid Cage 6800 only does 30.

Ehrm ... 32 only when going full monty and upgrading to 11 speed. 30 is max on 6700

For all day solo riding on my current 10-speed compact double, I find a 46T big ring is perfect and puts me mostly near the middle of the cassette. I don't care about sprints or going fast down hills, so I don't need anything bigger. I ran out of low gears on a recent JogLe.
I might want to go up an alp one day and I have no pride or sense of shame, so I think my next bike should have triple with the smallest granny ring I can get. 46/30/20 would be just about perfect.
Is that possible on a road bike ?

you could get a non 6700 RD that works with your shifters that supports 32t i imagine

Or d) Train loads, upgrade your legs and stick with the gears you have (Cost $0)

Good option, but increasing the amount I ride is exactly why I want an easier gear. The hills here are pretty full on, and I get jelly legs from grinding instead of being able to spin at higher cadence :/

You might struggle to find a front dérailleur with the 26T range. Shimano FD-T781 is probably the closest fit to your desire, as it's optimised for 44-48T big rings and has 22T capacity, but I don't know whether it will play nicely with road STI/Ergo/Dubtap. If you have a non-indexed downtube or bar end lever, you should be fine. TA Carmina/Vega cranksets are still available in the slightly old-school MicroDrive 94/58 pattern which will allow a 20T inner ring. So, it's possible, but that doesn't mean it's advisable. You end up with some weird components when it would probably be better to get off and walk :-)
