  • why so many doubles rather than just running every day and a rest day every two weeks?

Partly life / family balance & simple planning to run both ways on any one day but also working on both the theories of 2nd run is on looser muscles & double days work towards longer time on feet / running form when more tired.

Other non run weekdays will be gentle bike commutes, occasionally steady riding velodrome or ss mtb too but those easily dropped if needed.

Sounds like your run today was interesting from Strava title...

  • Man v horse yesterday, fucking awesome

    And painful

  • Great 10km run this morning through the Pentland Hills with my sister. A lot of steady climbs, nothing too strenuous, but a lot of uneven ground. Went over my ankle twice but managed to perpetuate through to the end. Bag of peas on the ankle now though, thats for sure.

  • makes sense, I see.

Yes, was on my way back when a woman on a phone asked me to stop and help a guy who was in the river. I couldn't initially see him because of vegetation but there he was, an old guy holding on to the side with a shopping bag around his arm and a bike attached behind him. Fortunately, one of the support boats for the rowers on the river came across and we got him up some steps a bit further downriver.

@sirlarry those hills look really good fun. I'm jealous.

  • That would be awesome if she's happy to! I'll drop you a PM...

  • No running for me over the weekend but I went up to catch the end of Endure 24 to cheer on a friend on Sunday. Missed her laps but fed some runners cake and came away inspired to enter for next year. 100 miles in 24 hours seems like a good target. Might not seem like such a good idea this time next year...

  • The Rob Young saga is better than a Coronenders Farmoakside Xmas Double Bill.

  • I've just scanned the letsrun thread. Crazy.

  • admittedly though they're absolutely stone bonkers over on letsrun.

they are to running discussions what britain first are to civilised political discourse

  • Time to focus on the shorter distances?

the lack of injury and fewer miles definitely sounds good.

  • Entry fees for a 5K are typically under $50 (I’ve done three this year that cost $25 or less), whereas the Boston Marathon costs $180 to enter.

Yanks are getting seriously fucking stung.

  • I like the idea of focusing on short runs - I would like still to knock out a 20 minute 5k (having said the same thing last year, but stopped training much a all) before age and decrepitude takes its toll.

  • Despite focusing on the opposite right now, I agree. 5mile & 10km deserve mention too.

  • It moved on 8 pages in an afternoon today impossible (and futile) to read all of it, most of what I have read is gnawingly painful.

  • Looks like fun. Any tips on running clubs/ groups? I've just moved to the area.

Sorry to hear about your ankle; hope it heals quickly.

  • On another note, I'm on holiday in north america for 3 weeks. Trying to fit in a run (or hike) every day. It's going well so far, albeit today might only be a quick amble around the block as I'm spending a lot of time on a bus. But so far I've done a 3 and a 6 mile run in Vancouver, and a 3 mile hike up Grouse Mountain, and a 5 mile run in Seattle. It is a fun way to experience new places.

  • Excellent! My bro lives in Vancouver. I visited him in 2010 and was due to attempt a run up the Grouse Grind but the weather conspired against me. I'm back there in a couple of months and we've already scheduled a hike up the Grouse. Then me and MsPub will be heading through Seattle and Portland by bus (probably) before embarking on a two-week Pacific Coast Hwy bike tour to San Francisco. And yes, we'll be taking our running shoes with us, just to keep the running legs ticking over on "rest" days. Any tips on running/non-running in Seattle? (We've only got a couple of nights' stay-over on the way to and back from SF.)

I followed in @juanito's footsteps last night by turning up for a race in Battersea Park and not finishing. Ugh! It's a Veterans' AC 5 mile race series and I was feeling confident in having a go at my pb, 26:45. Just to confuse matters my autolap was set to km rather than miles, and in hindsight I started off a bit quick - opening km's 3:13, 3:14 - not helped by a local rival who is known for shooting off like a madman, then either running well or blowing up spectacularly. I'd settled into 2nd place, and started closing on him, but less than two miles into the race my pace started slowing as I felt my breathing was being massively hampered by the stuffy conditions in the park. Humidity 79% according to the forecast, and I suffer pretty badly when there's any pollen in parks. 3rd km split 3:19, so not drastic but it felt worse... I actually caught the guy so was leading the race by this time, but an annoying habit he has is putting in random surges, and together with the dodgy breathing, constant snot rockets to clear my airways, and ongoing confusion between km splits and mile markers, it all just gave me a complete head-fuck. Finally he took a convincing lead, my mental arithmetic was telling me that my PB was beginning to slip away, I felt bloody horrendous, and I had another race to look forward to on Saturday, so I called it a day.

The Garmin showed exactly 3 miles in 15:59, 5:20/mile, which equates to 26:40 for 5 miles, but I really was slowing at that point and just felt awful. Ah well, there's another one next month. Hopefully conditions will be more favourable, my head will be in a better place and I'll just HTFU and get on with it.

  • I wonder if the pollen in Battersea park is particularly bad at the moment?I'm considering running without a garmin next time i race there.

Glad to see you saving yourself for this Saturday.

In accordance with my new 'abandoning the marathon' training programme i just did the massive session of 2 mile warm up, 4 x 400, 1 mile warm down. Made a bit of a change. 400s in 61,64,65,65, so i got the pacing a bit wrong.

  • @sirlarry superb. Wild country runs on there. Nav. Silence. Then bus back from Fairmilehead to Morningside. Brews and banter. #contrast #joy

  • anyone running the city mile on sunday?

  • 61?! Kinell, I think that's inside my race pace. (Which I'll probably never find out unless the B team is really struggling.)

Pollen seems to be affecting me more than ever this year. I think I'll make a point of dosing up with nasal spray before races for the foreseeable future, just in case. At least Sutcliffe Park is a little clearer than Battersea Park.

Had a pre-brekky gym session this morning, first in three weeks. 30 mins on the rower + jog there and back. Must get back into this habit, excellent bit of x-training. Planning on 4 x mile reps this evening.

  • Oh yeah, just sharing some shoe love. TK Maxx are knocking out some pretty damn cheap but good Adidas at the moment. I just ordered a pair of Glide Boost 7 (I've decided, my favourite shoes ever, 600 miles in) for £35.99 delivered. Nice! Not many sizes left but there are other variations of Boosty things on offer as well.

  • Game over for RY by looks of soshul meeja.

1/20 weeks plan done here. 5% already. Happy Days.

  • certainly looks that way. what a lot of posts on letsrun. seems that he was almost definitely cheating at the start.
