Which reminds me - what would be the hardtail frame of choice now for fast fire trail and single track?
If you want a capable bike that's more lols orientated than a lycra XC mile muncher I'd look at some of the 27.5 frames like the Stanton Switchback paired with some RS Revelations or Pikes...but only Pikes if you intend to do crazy shit.
That said my 29er F-Si is a riot until it gets real steep or real rocky.
People in the MTB thread will have other suggestions I'm sure.
I've got a couple kicking around - an X9 (short), X0 (long cage) and an X7 (long cage) - you can try one if you like.
Internet seems to think capacity of a short cage SRAM MTB is 32 so with a 53/39 12-30 you would have a set-up that on paper would work if you went short. Unless I can't math.
