We have a little get-together at work this evening. Might be able to join anyway since it starts quite early... I would take the train at Blackfriars at any rate.

I know, by this evening I meant the evening mentioned in the first post :)
Is there a rule saying that in this kind of case "this evening" means "the current evening" rather than "the evening that was mentioned before"? I got corrected in the same way about "this weekend" yesterday.

I don't know the rule with 'this' and 'that' but saying 'that' may be more precise in reference to the specified time/date/thing. Could be totally wrong though: http://dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/this-that-these-those
This/that/next weekend is tricky even for native speakers though. Many arguments have ensued due to the varying interpretation of 'next weekend'? Do they mean the immediately coming weekend, or the weekend after? It varies so don't worry too much (but do be aware of it!)

I prefer "the evening to which the kind gentleman @middleofnowhere was referring to by creating an event on Microcosm configured with a date in the future" but that's just me.

"This" for things that are here, "that" for thing that are over there. The displacement may be in time as well as space.
"This weekend" means the one that is coming next, it's a bit of a colloquialism but again, "that weekend" would be one you would have to point out on a calendar (i.e. not the one that is right here).

"This weekend" means the one that is coming next
Also, next weekend is usually for the one after this, so not the next one but the one after.

But "next" means nearest, n'est-ce pas? Always winds me up when the other side of the family does this to me.
It reminds me of the chairman of the board of a big organisation I was advising about elections to the board, where the rules said that, each year, a third of the elected directors (or the number nearest to a third) should step down. There were nine elected directors. I said that three should step down, because a third of nine is three. The chairman said that two should step down, because two is the number nearest to three. CSB.
Wish I could join this ride (or that ride) but I has a meeting after work at which i will probably be discussing interesting things like the difference between 3 and 2.
