I was in KL last year and I don't think I spent more than about 3 quid on a meal. I didn't bother with the restaurants and instead headed for the Hawker centres and street food places. There are plenty scattered around and it's easy to see which are popular with locals and head there.
There's also Jalan Alor which is a bit more touristy with loads of food stalls which is worth a visit.
