Don't count on it. There was 170 riders on tour divide last year, first 3 days were too busy for my liking. 500+ riders would be hell. #misanthropic

I'm with you that too much riders gets in the way of having fun, just because of the crowded controls, or just having to fear for your life in each descent because people don't overtake in a safe way, or let you overtake them so jams get created. But in my experience in massive starts, just keeping with the leaders wheel for the first hour or more will get you ahead of the big bunch and be able to enjoy a little more.
Maybe for a 10h road event, but for 600km mountainbike event? if you have the legs, you won't get bothered by much riders after the first 5-10h.
