  • Found my missing inner tubes (used) so now have a healthy stock of Conti tubes when i totally ruin the ultra light Schwable ones.

Gears was a proper ballache. First go everything worked, fluked it. Wheel out for brake fettling and then gears went to shit.
9th gear would not run right, indexing fine through the block but now won't sit in 9th.
After a long time of faffing about it appears that Monk doesn't like 11t sprockets, switched up to a 12t and as if by magic 9th gear works again, smooth as.
Used an old bit of cable outer to cut down to size, i have a swish Gore cable kit in ultra long length and if i am carefull i can get 2 full cable runs from the one length, measure many times then cut once, so gear cable to be redone at a later date.

Over inflated the tyres to seat the beading, roughly set the saddle, nipped up the control point bolts and calipers.
Went for a quick test ride before it got dark.

    :)

  • NDS piccy and some ramblings.

Rideable now, needs fettling and tweeking, shorten chain, may add a c-guide device, drop tyre PSI etc etc.
After a few months riding 700x28c and drop bars it was a culture shock looking down at the fat tyres, the Hans Dampf are fatter, killer fast steering and wide bars, brakes need some work for full power, happy with 180-180 not overkill, i think 200's would have been.

Had a slight moment. It felt weird riding around a football pitch popping wheelies (badly) tyres are way too high in PSI, the bike felt unnatural, and i felt old.
But that was the point in Lazarus Monk, unfinished business in Scotland, 2 mountains to return to and slay......... did i really do that...... what was i thinking ? i feel old, hardly ridden for a couple of years i miss the old me, the me that thought v-brakes and track wheels would be all right, they where just, but i promised myself and Monk one day we would go back to Scotland with proper wheels and brakes and to quote Henry Rollins "Get some- go again"
The bikes gained a few pounds i think, i can work that out later, still not heavy, well depends on how you term heavy, probs is a bit of a biffa but lighter than my normal bikes.

    Loves it :)

  • Done, rideable :)

Shimmed the calipers up 1.5mm to get the rotor sweep on the pads better, the Shimano 180s come in at 152g my old Hope 180 is 166g with wear. Re priced Hope again, 2xmounts and 2xfloating rotors = £96 with normal rotors £76 and £30 an end to go braided hose, Shimano and shims for the win.
Chain needs a deep clean to get the sticky packing grease off, want something to bung up the v-brake stud holes (mud traps)
With some sorting of parts bin i think i can drop maybe 1/2 kilo off the weight, must try and weigh it, more used to 35-45lb bike weights so whatever this is it's still light to me :)

  • Just crudely weighed the bike on the bathroom scales.

Bike as pictured above 10.8kg some rough maff, divide by 454g/1lb = 23.78lb or there-abouts :)
Getting down to 10kg should be doable with parts bin and losing the stainless steel flask and cage.

  • bad photo of my troll in city mode. this bike is so much fun

  • That Straggler looks great, I'm really tempted by the 650B version, Wish I could see some photos of a 54cm one

  • Liking this ECR. Sadly not mine.

  • Well I finally bit the bullet and ordered a Surly Straggler, had the first ride out today and it was the most fun I've had on two wheels in a long time!

I went for an appropriate frame size this time round, since its intended to be a sensible off-roader/touring bike, however I can help but look at the lack of seatpost on show and think the bike is too big for me. Maybe its down to the fact I ride a road bike frame thats too small for me with a lot of post showing. Hopefully I get used to it.

I want to make the change to bar end shifters asap as I hate the exposed brake cables on the Tiagra shifters, Will SRAM work with my Shimano rear derailleur?

I've also ordered an inline post to get me sitting a bit further forward, hopefully I can snag a 'Pizza rack' at some point too.

  • Great bikes. love mine. I wouldn't bother with Bar End shifters though. Just get a set of 105 shifters with the improved cable routing. Far more convenient.

  • The real reason behind the bar shifters is I was planning to use a large handlebar bag on a rack for touring, I'm worried that there won't be enough room to use the shifters if I get 105s

  • 105 5700 cable routing doesn't improve over tiagra, other than looking more modern.

  • I would use a dura ace downtube shifter instead a sti for a tourer.
    That troll look nice.

  • Little update, Thick Gummies, Cages and an inline seatpost.

  • Nice. Would move yer front light though, it's pointing up a bit, makes you visible, but also blinds oncoming motorists.

  • Soon.

  • I'm looking for the photo of a forum straggler thats set up with low rider panniers, purple with all black parts, black shoes black helmet too on the rider, anyone have an idea? looking for a similar rack setup and have a few questions to ask...

  • Nope, this one:

Who is it? I'm looking to get the exact model of front Panniers - are these a standard fit or do they all fit standard pannier racks?

  • That's @Dom I am pretty sure they are just standard Ortlieb front city rollers
