Will I really only manage a 35c tyre under my pdw fenders?
-
• #2303
Think that would go well with the white panels on the down/seat tube

Is there a forum-approved way of fixing a full guard (eg. SKS Chromoplastics) to a fork with no caliper eyelet (Enve Cyclo X)? I'm fine with axle mounts for the support struts, but I'm stumped for the top.

Don't know if it's available but...

Has anyone had any experience mounting a rear dynamo light on a mudguard? Should I route the cable on the inside of the mudguard or down the stay and chain stay? Would look neater under the mudguard but worried about extreme weather conditions and the cable getting soaked day after day......any help would be great.

Cable routing on quite a few Mobylettes run inside the rear mudguard - no problem with mine over ten years or so - provided the cable sleeve is not damaged it should be fine no matter what the weather. Grommets in entry and exit holes are a good thing to reduce chafing. Many moped mudguards have fold-over cable clips welded to the underside: bike guards probably don't, so you'll have to get creative if you're taking this route.

Maybe some shrinkwrap over the cable for insurance if you choose the inside route.

I couldn't work out a reliable way of holding the wire in place inside the guard when I did mine, so routed it along the chainstay and mudguard stay with cable ties and spiral wrap for points where it might rub/catch. I switched to a PDW Fenderbot not long after.

Inside, use sugru to keep it in place

think I will give the internal routing a go. Thanks for all the advice, I will keep you updated on my efforts when the new build comes together.

I have used internal routing on a steel mudguard, it worked.
Only problem is that you can't exactly removed the mudguard.

• #2313
No worries on removing the mudguard...what did you use to hold the cable on the inside of the guard?
-
• #2314
I just shove it inside the channel of the steel mudguard, and a bit of superglue.

Mudguard choice for my cross check, with 37c Vittoria Voyager Hypers:
Chromoplastics - cheap and light but slightly annoying the way they rattle /flap on my Plug (could be partly my bodger install skills)
Gilles B - cheap, heavy, relevant size not in stock at PX
PDW - ££ and don't think 45mm with 37c tyre is good option?
VO snakeskin 50mm could be the favourite. No flap though?
Any other suggestions?

Gilles B is lighter than Chromoplastic actually.
If your old mudguard rattle, then it's poor installation, saying that, with the alu VO mudguard, if you bodged it, it'll likely to snap.

Thanks Ed, Gilles B says >700g on PX website. Chromoplastics felt like quite a bit less but I didn't weight them or anything.
The clearance on my install seems ok, any tips for how I get the stays to hold the 'guard more firmly? All the rest of it is pretty secure.
New guards are for different bike.

700g for what sizes?
Chromoplastic is heavier due to stay.
Simply follow instruction and measure twice to fit the guard, the GB is the most reliable one on the list, chromoplastic second and VO third in term of bodging it.

You don't rate PDW?
-
• #2320
Read it wrong, says about 670g for 700c - seems fair. Maybe I will try to find some GB 50mm long.
-
• #2321
I do rate them for bicycle that aren't design with mudguard for mind but they re awfully expensive compared to GB or VO

Did a load of fettling today and managed to get some Schwalbe S-One on wide rims under a GB 40mm. Had to use a second rear mudguard brake adapter to make it fit (behind front brake) as the draw bolt nut was fouling the tire.
Quite happy with this setup now.

Looks good. What size are the tyres?
-
• #2324
@ChasnotRobert - 30c but on the wide rims at 55psi measure 34mm

Thanks - thinking I will definitely need 50mm guards then.
