Flat pedals thread

@bikes_knob - I've found the Saint pedals to be a definite improvement on the DX platforms. A nice wide platform more comfortably fits my size 15 plates, and the pins are easier to swap out than the old ones ( although you still have to swap to the longer ones ).

Having said that, I also like V12s.

I recently purchased a pair of these, http://www.vans.co.uk/uk-en/old-skool-mte-shoes.html perfect for flats and straps, i find that vans old skools are probably the best for riding flats and especially the ones in the link for cold wet weather riding, has a thermal lining, water replant coating and vulcanised lug out soles which offers better grip than regular vans.

I actually remembered reading those in Mountain Biking UK eons ago and brought them, great for MTBing before people switch to clipless for real.

Also available in these other variations if that's your thing, the high tops probably offer better protection from the elements

I've got Nukeproof Neutron flats on my MTB - good grip.

I normally ride in trainers - adidas superstars or similar, but I'm now thinking of some mtb-specific flat shoes. CRC have some deals on Five Ten shoes right now, the Freeriders look decent and wouldn't break the bank... Anybody tried them, got any views? Any decent alternatives?

I don't know, when MTBing, I usually look out for shoes that are water resistant for instance, easy to clean, as even the shittest trainers still retain grip on decent flat pedals.

*disclaimer - I use Doc Martens instead.

Cheers, I'd considered some walking boots for that very reason, but the Five Tens seem popular and are meant to have superior grip... I'll have a think, have got some a grubby pair of adidas that are working fine for now.

I went with airwalks from sport direct at £20 and paired up with sealskinz socks for dry feet.

The joy of flat pedals is a selection of length in the pins, tune the pin grip and pins and you don't need fancy rubber soled footware.

Had a pair of nukeproof alloy flats for a couple of years now on my ss.
I usually wear gazelles or cons when I ride. Never slipped off even in the wet. They were a present, but they were in my local independent cycle shop for £90 ! (He's expensive).

I've used a few different of those parallelogrammy V8 style ones and never really loved them. Always seem a bit bulky and shin-gouge-y.
Been using some MKS "Step-in" for a few years, bought initially as I was using Time Atacs for about town duties, but I've just been using the flat side for ages now, really like them. Single sided is a bit of a pain, but they are just nice.

Wear regular shoes - mostly leather Palladiums in winter, hi-top Vans in summer. But I don't like to wear my fancy ones as the pedals nibble bits out of the soles... Those tougher looking Vans with the slightly lugged soles look pretty good.

I was looking at the plastic nukeproofs but white and black unavailable, the colours don't really work for me. Will look at the alloys although £90 is a bit over budget...

I love mine. You need half toe clips with them really, though.

I've used 'em, and my missus loves them.

They're O.K. comfortable but not very grippy with clown shoes.
