Well, the medal table argument is a little disingenuous - we do well because we target sports in which throwing a shit load of money at them can give us a return. Cycling's the very obvious one, but other stupid sports like sailing, rowing etc, where most of the world doesn't give a fuck are good prospects for medals. Russia loves the banner sports, like athletics. There's a lot of complaints from middle distance runners particularly about the russian athletes. Tends to be that dirty athletes don't complain about other dirty athletes so much.
