  • Victorian mid-terrace
was 3 bedroom and now 2 bedroom. Pretty sure they were built without upstairs bathroom, so third bedroom was divided at some point to create upstairs bethroom and bedroom.

Get a big bathroom and give af about the consequences!

  • ha! I wish .. ours is 1940s 2 bed mid-terrace although could easily be 3 as the main bedroom is mahosive .. most houses have converted to 3 bed around us .. we are definitely saving up for an extension at the back so its either keep the current bathroom as is and treat it as a second/small bathroom and get a big one downstairs .. so confuse! Gonna use your place as inspo .. tbh our pinterest board is identical :P

  • Any recommendations for "skip bag" sale & collection services in London?

  • Hippo bag?

  • Hippo bag?

They seem pricey. I was wondering if anyone had personal experience of a cheaper option and knew how specific you could be with pickup time.

  • Kitchens.
    What's the view:
ikea = good, best at the price?

How much for rip everything out, put new cupboards in, possibly move boiler, build some bench seating?

  • Ikea can look good but isn't great quality, for one there isn't room for pipes as standard so you'll have to chop bits out the back.

  • diy-kitchens.com if you're happy designing it yourself.
Or get someone round from one of the sheds design/quote and then recreate the layout with diy-kitchens.

Also that scope of work will most likely involve a variety of trades so estimating a price isn't really doable.

  • I'd definitely swap those for switched ones. You can pay slightly more for ones which isolate live and neutral (as opposed to just live). About £1 odd in B&Q.

  • Go up and knock on the door at 2.30 until they answer

    This.

    Every time.

  • £1000 - £2500 to rip it out and fit new
    £1000 - £1500 to move boiler
    £500 - bench seating

  • shaving mirrors

Can anyone recommend a good quality and sturdy one that holds its position where it's set?

    Cheers

  • Really enjoying seeing your place come together looks great and i have bathroom envy!

  • No worries, good shout on the local tip.

Kitchen looks great btw, bet you can't wait to use it in anger...

  • I've tried fixing our wooden floor, and realise I neither have the tools/ skills/ strength to actually achieve anything.
Anyone got a good carpenter recommendation? (NW8)
Also would be keen to get a bit of storage built by the same people.

  • The cold water pipe under my bath is leaking and I don't have any access (the bath panel is tiled on). The original plan was to regulate shower temperature on the boiler until I got the bathroom redone. This is starting to bug me so the plan is to take the side off, sort out the plumbing and replace with a cheap bath panel.

The current tiled section looks like tiles stuck to a piece of ply attached to wooden battens. I assume that once I've removed the tiles/lump of ply and sorted out the plumbing then the panel can just be attached to the existing battens and sealant run around to finish.

Sound like a plan or am I missing something?

  • That should be fine, just make sure the bath hasn't shifted or run some extra sealant around the wall join to be safe.

  • Cheers. The sealant's in a bit of a state so I may replace that anyway.

  • Sorry, I've totally forgot, how much of that bathroom did you do yourself? I really need to get mine done within the next 6 weeks and struggling to find people. Am I fuck paying 4k for it though...

  • I didn't do very much at all but I can ping you the details of the bathroom fitter, he was really good and one of the cheapest quotes I received.

  • could you also ping that to me? thank you.

don't worry chris, I won't book it in before you.

  • Cheers. That would be spot on. Been talking to a lad who charges 45 quits per half hour. 675 a day? Jog on.

  • 200 large per annum! Is he one of these stock brokers who gives it all up to work an honest trade? :)

Sorry I couldn't help you out Chris. You're going to get a few ridiculous quotes if you ask for imminent start dates though. The logic is a plumber on call can make £45 per half hour so why would he tie himself up on a job earning £200 a day. Even in the trade I'm looking at £50 an hour if I ever need a specialist plumbing job done. I can learn a lot in an hour though so I've picked up my moneys worth watching them work.

Have you tried local building firms, they often have a team that can handle bathrooms. You'll need to have your specification and design really tight though as it will all happen very quickly. Avoid the specialist bathroom fitting firms, you'll end up with a miserable tradesman working to the tightest budget and fitting the lowest quality stuff.

  • No worries. I'm pretty flexible date wise but have a budget in mind. No way am I paying someone that kind of money, thats way over the tipping point of me taking time off and doing it myself.

  • @chrisbmx116 and @fredtc You've both got PMs

Yeah - I'm pretty sure some people price things just because they don't want to do it.

Best quotes I've had have been thorough and broken jobs down and included the associated cost. Seems simple but I've been surprised. Comprehension of ROI from using sites like Mybuilder and ratedpeople is shocking, I wonder how they manage to ever run a business sometimes!
