  • Thank you guys. The monitors have vol control. So I just need the signal from the record player.

Have been looking at this kind http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pro-Ject-Audio-Systems-The-Phono-Box-Pre-Amp-/331843096826?hash=item4d4363d0fa:g:-9IAAOSw3mpXIklp

  • Yep, that would be good if you just need the phono stage.

  • Thx. Ill make a bid

  • Has anyone had any experience with cheaper 'retail' focused twinslot systems like this one http://www.twinslot.co.uk/shelving/Sapphire-Twin-Slot-Free-Standing.html for record storage?

Looks like the 500mm shelves + bodged book supports get you close to the vitsoe system?

  • Beogram is back, again, doesn't work right, again, thats 2 attempts at fixing it by an "expert".
Dazza has my other and is being very elusive (3 months now, rarely replies to messages).
I need a new turntable, I want a Rega, performance pack one prob, is there anywhere in East London where I can bloody walk in and buy one? Anyone?

  • Are they telling you it's been fixed each time? Try calling Dazza, I found that more effective.

  • Yeah, supposedly, but arrives not working... really don't know what the guy is playing at.
Might just go to richer sounds and get a Project turntable. Sick of not having a record player... to hell with this vintage lark.

  • Project turntable

Are you still dead against a 1200/1210? I've been reading up on entry-level turntables and have come away firmly convinced that one of the two 1210s I already have is a much better option for casual listening.

  • Aye, to be fair. Looks are way off for me. I know, I know...
Rega P1 or Project? Rega looks simpler but the dark grey won't match my black and wood amp... hmm...

  • Very nice but a bit over budget. Plus I need it today.

  • Linn is still working fine :)

Sevenoaks Hifi have pro-ject decks and also a NAD deck which looks ok.

  • Audio T stock rega - call the shop in Enfield and see what they have in stock

  • Ha, it's prob a better deck too but I can't deal with second turntables any more. Resisting a braun too. Off to Holloway Road, place there has rega.

  • Is that Bartlett's? Didn't know they were still going. Bought a few things from there way back in North London days.

Since I've had the Axis set up, the SL1210 has been sidelined. I was definitely going to get rid of the Axis... Now I'm not sure.

  • let me know if you decide to punt the 1210

  • Ok, will do. I'm not decided which way to go at the moment.

  • cheers - i fancy seeing having a go at modding one.

although, i just set up and put a new stylus on my rega and i amazed at the sound diff.

  • That's the place! Nice guys. Wanted the rega, got the debut carbon because the rega wouldn't fit. Also plug didn't come off, which would have been an issue.

Sounds incredible. Finally, a working record player...

  • Nice one!

  • Great! What cartridge?

  • Erm, just the regular one it comes with? Sounds decent though. My hearing prob Ian good enough for expensive ones. Sounds better than my Beogram for sure though.

  • Ortofon 2m red according to Google - good choice :)

  • Slightly away from hi-fi with this question, but I know there are some electronics types here, so probably the best place.

The powered monitor speaker I'm looking at (Dynaudio BM6a) has a known problem with its protection relay, meaning the tweeter doesn't kick in until you give it some and wake it up. I could only see one relay on the board, so will this be the one protecting the LF driver too?

So far, people online have only complained about the problem re the tweeter, but ours has a similar problem with the woofer. Dynaudio are bad at providing schematics, too, which doesn't help.

The problem can be solved temporarily by turning it off and on again, when the protection circuit doesn't kick in in time and the woofer gives a big thump. This makes me think it's not just some loose connection.

I'm inclined to try it, given that the relays are only $10 on ebay.

    Any advice gratefully received.

  • Topping NX2 portable DAC question!

    Running a Sony Z2 > Lindy OTG USB cable > Topping NX2 DAC > Lindy (I think?) 3.5mm/RCA cable > Cambridge Azur 540r > Ruark Paladin

So, running the phone to the amp through the 3.5mm/RCA cable, sounds awful, very quiet, very murky, a whole bunch of no.

Running the phone to the DAC via 3.5mm/RCA then to amp, much better, NX2 is basically behaving as a headphone amp, but the phones built in amp/chip is still having a say in the matter. As far as phones go the sony Z2/3/5 all sound pretty good as standard compared to others.

Running the phone to the NX2 via USB OTG with standard app on phone doesn't yield any better.

Running phone > NX2 via USB OTG cable and a DAC friendly app such as USB audio Pro (?) gets much better results, happy with that. Still doesn't sound as good as a decent source, but then its a £30 battery powered box, not a professional piece of gear.

BUT..... running the NX2 on the OTG USB cable either with or without the DAC USB app I have this problem, which makes me think its not truly operating as a DAC. With the NX2 powered on, sounds as it should, turn the NX2 off though, and audio can still be heard through the amp/speakers albeit very very quiet. To me that feels like the NX2 is still only recieving analogue audio but through the USB cable instead of the 3.5mm jack, correct?
