I can see why he'd do it. He's not optimistic about Labours chances in an election, but as mayor of a city he could have some influence in a leadership role that didn't rely on the rest of the country backing the party. But yes, it would be a real shame to lose one of the few "centrist" labour MPs who have stayed on the front bench under Corbyn's leadership, helping to unite the PLP.
