Weight / Fat loss

  • I'm currently doing the keto thing. Feels unnatural and unhealthy really, despite the claims otherwise. I've gone full geek mode , peeing on sticks and drinking MCT oil.

I began with the Phil Maffetone suggestions which seem to have merit (low intensity exercise and sensible food) but spent too long on the Internet and fell for the snake oil stuff.

Ran a half marathon last week with zero carbs and felt no ill-effects. Actually felt quite strong.

3kg from my (1st) target weight and then I can have the lasagne my body has been crying out for.

  • Wake up - take a piss - weigh yourself

Not sure if that will help the cravings though! They have a beef version at the bottom.
Been doing low carb myself, but not too strictly, seems to help a bit, but not sure.

Half mara on 0 carbs is pretty good though?

  • Where/when is the best time to give yourself a weigh to get a consistent figure from which to benchmark your gains(loss)?

depending on your level of effort - wake up, drink 1.5 litres of water within 30 minutes. wait another 30 mins/1 hour. then weigh yourself immediately after the loo.

  • I'm starting to encounter the same problems as above. Lost 4kg so far tracking with myfitnesspal after being stuck at 93kg but 0.5kg of that is lean mass if my scales are to be believed. Problem is my girlfriend is vegan and I try to only buy what I consider to be ethical meat/dairy, so I want to find something like 40g extra protein a day compared to what I'm eating now.

Apart from stacks of eggs, what's a good supplement? Looking at protein cookies and things but they can be kind of expensive.

  • Why not go for some protein powder? Organic or vegan varieties exist.

  • pole and line caught tuna - includes tesco basics, weirdly. 64p per can.
bulk powders protein shakes are from grass fed cows
GOMAD (gallon of milk a day)

ethical and expensive are both subjective, so those suggestions might be completely off point

  • re: keto. i'm getting back into it - forgot how rubbish the first month or so was, i remember feeling really really healthy tho once i'd adapted.

i fell off the wagon when away snowboarding at beginning of the month because beer. stupid beer.

  • Lentils for protein, way more than you need unless you're pumping weights. Also high in fibre so will help you go before weigh in.

  • Thanks all, some good suggestions. I wanted to avoid powder because of the faff of preparing it, but it might be the best way. Tuna is a good idea for sure

  • Black beans, or other beans. Excellent source of protein.

I'm currently trying low/no meat, minimal dairy and mainly plant based as haven't had success with other ways of eating. Based on the "eat fruit/veg when you want till your full" idea.

Will report back in a month to see if it does the trick (initially seems to be working)

  • That's what I'm on and can attest it's worked for me so far. Good luck.

  • Thanks!

Another motivation for me is some persistent injuries/muscle stiffness. I read that a diet like this can help with that, have you noticed any other changes other than weight loss?

  • I'm always cold at night now, my skin has become drier but that's about it really.

  • Weird you say that, I've been doing this for about 3 weeks and I used to sleep in my baby suit even through winter... Now I'm sleeping in a hoody with the hood up!

  • Yeah, I'm fuckin freezing these days. I sleep in my winter pyjamas now with a thick gown on top as well. Perhaps I used to eat thermo-nuclear amounts of meat or something but my core has definitely dropped.

  • 10.5kg lost in 2 months!

A pretty non-event week. Have had knee issues so have refrained from cycling or running and then I went to my mum's house at the weekend which diet wise is a disaster.

  • I managed to shed a good amount but with 2 weeks if being back in the UK staying at the in laws I've undone all my good work, so much good food being made for me and lack of excersise has just piled on the weight, time to start again :(

  • Overall down 5kg since the beginning of the year, would like to drop two more in the next four weeks. I find not rewarding myself for progress really hard which has caused some serious weight see-sawing of late which can't be good. Must. Not. Booze.

I have certainly stalled. Decided not to watch what I ate last week as I wanted to relax before my half marathon. Have committed to get back on track this week.

  • I've only lost about 5kg since the beginning of the year, which isn't as much as I would have liked, but I am definitely less flabby/more smug about my healthier lifestyle. I can do handstands! And press ups! Admittedly not very many but an increase on the zero I could do previously.

  • I think I'm back where I started but I'm still going faster so whatevsbro
