I looked at the Crests due to their light weight, but came to a similar conclusion. Now considering Grails or DT swiss r460 db, both 450g/rim.

@fox sent me the following pm
It's been a very long time, hope you're well?
I'm currently trying to decide what to put on a Genesis Croix de Fer frame I've bought, which has meant entering the world of road disc which I know nothing about!
I seem to have narrowed it down to a few rims including Stans Crests and Pacenti SL25's. At the moment Stans Crest seem to be winning based on cost/weight. It seems you've had both on the (very nice) commuto-cross, which is pretty much the kind of bike I'm trying to put together.
As you've owned both, which do you prefer? And can you definitely run road tyre pressures on the Crests without dying, as I seem to be having the same problem you had with confirming this info!?
Would appreciate any info :)
I used my Crests with inner tubes at road pressures. They did well, but the rear rim did split at the eyelets - possibly my weight plus panniers was too much. Also they could never be used for road tubeless as they could not take the pressure.
Phil at Neils Wheel's who build up the Pacenti's said they were a much nice rim to work with than any Stans rims. I have used them tubeless and with other tyres and inner tubes.
Given how effective road tubeless has been for me I'd say buy the pacentis, and go road tubeless. I got thousands of miles out of Schwalbe One tyres, and they are made as a race tyre. I am really fucking impressed and given that when they have not sealed all I needed to do was pop in an inner tube I really can't see what is not to like.

Has anyone built some wheels with DT Swiss R460 rims?
https://www.bike24.com/p2155362.html
I'm after something mildly shallow and trying to work out whether some Stans Grails are worth the extra £50 or so

Think @plexarice used em on his Defy.
-
• #6556
youve gone disc too blake?
-
• #6557
Yep Arup built them onto some vision hubs for me, roll beautifully, had no problems so far.

Mind me asking how they are in terms of flex under weight? They'll be on a daily bike with me + backpack and I noticed they have a 110kg weight limit
@swedeee Kinda, they're for the track bike and I'm putting a front brake on that more for aesthetic purposes over a rim to be honest. As far as road bike goes, I'm currently happy with rim brakes on an alu surface, at least for the summer, might change next winter though

I have the rim brake version on my sweet fixie

I did a 3 day tour on the bike with them 24 front / 28 rear with just clothes & tools, still probably below the 110 kg limit. Didn't notice any flex

@amey they okay riding down kerbs etc.?
@plexarice cheers, everything seems positive so far
My main worry is that me at 80kg + backpack etc. will bring me close to 110kg and then everyday riding might take it's toll on them. That said all reports seem to positive so far, and they're so cheap that if I do break one, it's still cheaper to replace than buy a pair of Grails

Absolutely fine. 24/28, mack hubs, Sapim race silver, maxxis re-fuse 25c and I am 64kg.
-
• #6563
you're going to put 20kg of stuff in your bag??? your poor back
-
• #6564
Isn't that 110kg per wheel?
-
• #6565
@plexarice #strongasbull , joking, just saying I might get closer to it, with everything else I may drape off the bike
@amey cheers
@andy_k if it is this has all been in vain
Cheers for your help though all, convinced me to go with them :)

I have, the second wheel set I built myself and they're lovely. they came together very easily, needed only a little truing and are perfect to this day.

110kg weight limit
There'll be a considerable safety margin factored into that: they won't explode in a ball of fire at 111kg*.
And as Andy_k suggested, I'd expect the limit to be per wheel.
*Or will they?

Looking for a set of disc wheels for a wolverine build I've got on the go. I know fuck all about discs. I know they're not road wheels per se but if anyone does and can spare an opinion on these:
For commuting use for about a year r so until I upgrade to alfine hub gears. Will they do? Or is it worth spending a little more on something like this:
Or something else? They just need to be wide to accommodate 40-45mm tyres.
Cheers

I'd expect the limit to be per wheel
I wouldn't.

Ah, just saw this. Thanks! That's very helpful. And I hope you are well :)
-
• #6571
The silver are stronger than black?
-
• #6572
Me neither. Not unless they're explicitly marketed as unicycle rims.
-
• #6573
I've been wrong before.
I was wrong this time.
This is a trend I expect to continue.
(Thanks Andy.)

Did some more searching... DT Swiss Techbook (PDF) lists them as 110 "Recommended system weight max. [kg]", what does system weight mean?
-
• #6575
Rider plus bike weight.
Good to know..!
From what I can figure out they are more worried about tubeless tyres blowing off the rim than the rim tearing apart (I absolutely get your point about the risks of inflating a tyre past what a rim can withstand). Stans have told various people (not just James) that they can run road pressures with tubes and I've googled and only found one instance of a Crest snapping and that was on a MTB.
However, I can't say I'm totally reassured and one definite downside of the Crests is you can't use them for road tubeless, which means they aren't very future proof for a bike that'll mainly be a road bike. So a heavier rim is looking like a good idea.
