  • Anyone with a rooted Nexus 5x or 6p older than a few months?

I'd like to know whether system updates still work flawlessly each month?

I'm not looking to flash a new ROM, just to root so that I can use a couple of root-only apps (though I lose the Barclaycard app in the process).

  • Are you asking whether you can update stock OTA after rooting?

  • No, then. Your best bet if rooted is to unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery like TWRP. You'll then have to manually download the updates from Google and flash from the recovery. I wouldn't expect that many more system updates for the 5x anyway.

Once you root and/or unlock the bootloader, Google will no longer push updates to your device.

  • Thanks.

    I suspected as much.

That's all I want to achieve, give me root (for capabilities) but I'm cool with stock software.

  • So. er. Yeah. Where have my photos gone?
They were on the phone. They're not now.

  • I've got them all. I'm printing them out and putting them up around london with your phone number attached.

  • Were you backing them up to the cloud in any way?

  • Bugger.

I am a fanboy. I know, but Google photos is all kinds of great.

  • Have you tried using Google Photos via a PC, I thought they auto backed up?

  • Deleting files on most OSs just involve deleting the links to the files - the data still exists on the drive, but the pointer to that piece of data no longer exists.

If you haven't used the phone extensively, it's possible that the data still exists.

You can "buy" some recovery software (Zero Assumption Recovery is my favourite), and plug your phone / scdard into another machine to run it.

  • I use Onedrive for backing up pictures. Everything I take is instantly uploaded (assuming some form of internet connection) but nothing is shared by default.

  • By default Google photos won't share either.

  • ^ Was just about to ask that. I guess this may depend on the specific phone but can you set it to only upload specific photos rather everything automatically? I haven't looked into the setting yet but I can't get into my Flickr account since changing phones so was considering Google Drive instead.

  • I think Google photos originally attached them to your Google+ account and had them visible but that was years ago.

  • Fingers crossed for you dude. I'd hate to lose that lot.

I really cherish all my photos of your family.

  • Just opened google photos and there are 11239 items waiting to back up.

On your phone or on a desktop?

I'm not entirely familiar with how google photos work (I use owncloud & local storage backups), but you should be aware that recovery of deleted files works best when you run recovery software before anything else - There is a risk that using other software will write to the parts of the drive that the photos are stored (but not linked), and they'll be gone for good.
