What's the chop with the 511 "funny nipples"? I'd like to use standard spokes for the build in case I need to track spare parts down in Randomville.
You can use standard spokes, but the nipples and washers are part of the rim design. Probably best to carry some spares, as the underside of the head is their non-standard hemispherical ProHead® design to match the profile of the PHR washers. The Torx drive is just the next step up from my usual preference for building from outside the rim with hex head nipples, there's a conventional square interface for fixing the wheels from the inside with a conventional spoke key.

So normal spoke heads will fit? They won't be too small or something? It's just for emergency repair.
I hate non-standard shit like spokes though - should I consider the Velocity rims instead? They don't require any weird crap do they?
Same goes for SL25s, but they're not as deep/aero/strong/sexy...

It says you can use a regular spoke tool with their DT Swiss Squorx Pro Head Nipple (http://forums.mtbr.com/wheels-tires/anybody-building-wheels-dt-swiss-xm401-xr331-rims-896895.html). But can you replace one of those DT nipples with a standard nipple for repairs?
I guess no one is making deeper rims because it makes more sense to use cabron for that shiz.
Do all the other rims you mention use standard spokes/nipples?
