• GF has a desire for something lighter than her fatbike but more suitable for gnarly stuff than her race-ready Voodoo Bokor with SID forks, Crest rims and 2.0"-ish tyres.

Spotted the Dartmoor Primal Plus, tyres up to 27.5x3.0", frame only £205.
Quick session of googling, CRC, Merlin, CtBM etc... total build £1600+

Of which £1111 would be "chubby-specific": Frame Forks, Rims, Hubs.

Might have to find some cheap 135/170QR hubs and build up some b-plus wheels for the fatbike instead.

Does it have to be +? What about a Bird / Stanton / Whatever?

  • Her Genesis Caribou has given her bags of grip and confidence, but the weight's a killer, hence plus. Since getting that, the Voodoo has felt decidedly noodly, which it is, because I specced it light :-/

She had a roll round on CtBM's bike at BOTB: Vassago Ti Hardtail with Manitou Magnum Pro forks, Stans Hugo52 rims, Maxxis Chronicle 3" tyres. And Boost hubs. Fuck Boost.

The 29er version of 2016 RockShox Boost forks (SID, Reba, Pike) are listed as also doing 27.5x3.0", so they should be cheaper and easier to find.

  • Had another chat about this last night.

A chunkier 26" would let her swap in her current light wheels (Olympic/XT), but only if the dropouts are 100QR and 135QR, which is quite limiting. Rotor sizes would also need to match.

    More ebay browsing expected...
