I know mil watches aren't everyone's cup of tea, but there was only one watch issued by the RAF in 1976 known as the "Lost Navigator". Nobody knows which supplier made it, and only around 2000 were issued.

Chrono 24 has a date search filter. You could try that, then look for ones with a UK bricks and motar shop. It will also give you an idea of the watches from that period you may not have thought about.

One on eBay just now. Overpriced at £400. £250 would seem more reasonable. I paid around £100 for mine a while back.
