• Plastic fenders rattle/snap.

Doubles/compacts are fine for touring with a 36t cassette, if I can manage the mountains in the Balkans on that configuration then nobody should have an issue.

    It's a Rando bike.

  • Mine are fine (SKS) no rattling, no snapping.

Good on you, but I need the 32F*32R on mine loaded in the Scotland hills...
...of course it's not impossible and Audax bikes tend to have doubles rather than triples. Just wouldn't be my first choice.

  • I do like SKS guards having used them previously (and have a pair for a current build) but that was the difference I found, the metal guards were quieter and more robust, not sure on weights but the Alu VO fenders aren't heavy.

Your triple setup gives about 1 1/2 less gi than my double, so not a huge difference. Always scope to fit a 38/40/42 cassette of needed. I think developments in cassette sizes mean people can reconsider traditional arrangements.

I think I would have welcomed a mtb triple and a 22 granny ring at some points but I would probably be sat still spinning up the hills now.

Ironically those kind of mudguard are more prone to breaking than the metal one.

If you want proper functional mudguard, go for an all steel one, which, again ironically lighter than a similar SKS one.
