  • No inner ring, no front derailler. High risk high reward? Not worth it

Is a 1x drivetrain really so bad? I just reassembled my p2 with a single chainring... Did an hour long shakedown ride on some pretty bumpy roads today with no issues, but I've not raced with it yet.

  • Is a 1x drivetrain really so bad?

We all used them in the olden days, and nobody was ever bothered by chain drops enough to think about adding anything to keep it on. I spoke to my dad about it earlier, and between us we couldn't recall more than a couple of dropped chains, and we have well over 50 seasons between us on bikes with 1×5/6/7/8 drives. The last time I dropped a chain during a race was on a bumpy downhill on a fixed bike, so it seems that nothing short of a full DH rollers 'n cages chainguide is completely fool proof.

  • Corn cob 11s 11t Whatever Shimano do.

    What about it?

  • Depends. I rode it last year and dropped it once or twice but not in races. Probably had higher chain tension last year.

  • 11spd probably bit more flexy sideways than older chains?

  • Depends who you believe. Not sure I can be arsed with another chainring. Do Shimano even do them? Are there aero 56T versions? Do you need special chain? How's chain tension?

  • 11spd probably bit more flexy sideways than older chains?

    Probably

  • I don't have to believe anyone - I have tested it and it works for me :)

None from Shimano and not sure that there are any aero-ones out there yet.

Just use a normal 11 speed chain and set chain tension to a sensible level.

  • No use if I can't get a 55/56T fat/thin though.

  • It might work for you, they're pretty stretchy. My cleats are sort of three quarters of the way back as a comparison.

While I'm here, has anyone recently bought some Velotoze? I got a new pair for this season, they seem to indent much easier than last years pair. Even after one race you could see every lump and bump of the shoe imprinted into the rubber once you took them off.

  • Sure they can do narrow wide if you ask. But you ain't gonna get a 55t... ;) 56 should be fine.

  • Not sure if they would: Stephen is a N/W naysayer (of course, money talks).

  • More the difficulty of machining from sheet carbon, I'd imagine.

Surely it would be easier, since more of the original stock is left in place :-)

There's a lot of experimental and programming time in making N/W rings, but I don't think the cycle time on the CNC would be much different in Fibrelyte's process

Apparently Nutshell off of the TT Forum has a 3D printed chain guide on his P3, I haven't seen it but it might be worth asking him about it.

  • excellent, i'm just about to enter as soon as i can be arsed to get off the sofa to find a card!

if you can sort out the right amount of traffic and ideal weather conditions, i'll bring my big boy pants and push the pedals a bit harder!

anyone know if are there any club events on the F11/10 this year, looks like a quick course...

  • Info on club events on the F11/10 are usually posted on the VC10 forum... I've not looked recently though.

  • I'm already talking to him about some other stuff so I'll mention it, cheers.

  • Cheers, does look like it might work. At least worth a test, I guess. Will update when mine finally fall apart.

  • I've got some white, XL Velotoze I bought last year that you can have.

I used them a couple of times, but CBA and bought some more aero shoes instead.

    PM if you want them.

  • Velotoze are great if you don't mind sweating your feet, even in cold temperatures... no transpiration at all. Also you need to be very very very careful not to make any holes on them, even using the talcum/baby powder...

  • I've given up on Velotoze this season

  • For all the difference even good overshoes make, I figure you're better off starting with a more aero shoe rather than trying to improve a pair of clogs*.

*Actually, I reckon clogs would be quite aero.

  • Yeah, might be up for them.

    What did you get instead?

  • I normally can't feel my feet so hot/cold doesn't matter.
