So I think I've basically neglected the bike through the winter as it seems to be throwing a few toys out of the pram all at once.
- Either the front calliper is gunked up or stuck, or the cable is sticking as the brake doesn't open properly after braking sometimes
- The front disc appears to resemble a pringle - I cannot get it true :(
- There's a nice loud clicking coming from the rear hub. No idea if it's freehub body or wheel bearings.
- There's a slightly less loud clicking coming from the front tyre - like something's stuck in there. Only I can't see or find anything.
Not quite sure which one to attack first, or if I can even strip/clean the brake calliper if necessary!?

Welp, looked into the brake thing and I've a very rusty calliper that is now going to be replaced under warranty by TRP.
They referred me to this article, which I'd found previously, but wasn't keen on stripping them and voiding the warranty, plus things feel pretty crunchy after cleaning them out with half a can of WD40, so I think the bearings are past their best anyway.
TRP have been really great on email with the advice/warranty situ, but a bit of a bummer that the bike is going to be out of action for a bit.
Riding the roadie to work is a mixed bag. Fast = good. Backpack = bad.

Cheers for the link on the spyre service. Will do that on mine as preventative although I think they may have been binding a little too...

Most welcome!
TRP have done me a proper solid and are replacing the front calliper under warranty via their UK distro. Their service has been ace - really communicative and responsive which totally takes the edge off having the bike out of action. So props to Katie @ TRP there.
She did recommend doing the spraying out/lubing thing that's mentioned in that thread, every month or so I guess. Will be dodging that area in future as far as the degreaser goes too.

Got this back on the road a week or so ago, and finally fitted the Tara & panniers, did a bit of a test ride last night. Pleasantly surprised by the general lack of rattling, and the handling feels slightly better than it did with the platform rack & backpack up high.
Think it'll generally take a little while to adjust to the weight of the bike overall though - did just shy of 40 miles but felt like I'd ridden more. Wasn't hugely quick either.
I think fitting all my kit into two small panniers & rando bag might be challenging, but there's always the option for a seatpack kind of affair if needs be. Need to get the tent & sleeping bag purchased so I can see what I'm dealing with!

Didn't strip my SLC's on the 650 build, but did liberally spray and work a load of lubricant in to the calipers this weekend. Worked a treat on a slightly stuck front caliper. Will be repeating regularly! Thanks for the heads-up

Have you got a frame/top tube bag? Super handy for tools/electrics/maps/food/cash/tent poles and pegs, phone etc. If you get a full length top tube bag you really can get a lot in there which might free up space elsewhere for bulkier less heavy items.

Worked a treat on a slightly stuck front caliper.
I took apart a customer's Spyre to see why it felt rough, and found it to be quite dry (the ball bearing).
Also the bearing is TINY, like really tiny compared to the Avid BB7 (which use 3 big bearing instead).

@willhouse cool! Hope it does the job.
@TM thats a good idea, esp for tent poles. Though I run a frame pump under tt so not sure if they would interfere.
This is all, however, potentially moot, as I was in a hit & run on my way to work on Friday and am now sporting a broken collarbone, plenty of road rash (obvs), and a fucked up bike. Will still be leaving on my trip but unsure about riding.
I haven't inspected properly yet but there's cosmetic damage to all four "corners" of the bike including the tubus tara which hadnt even been on for a week :/
I was out cold for a while and have no memory between seeing the car drive into my legs and waking up on my back with a bypasser calling the services. Ive no idea how I landed but Ive lost most of the back of my jacket to the road so I assume I slid quite a long way. Was doing about 25mph down hill.
doing everything with my wrong hand sucks :(

Bollocks! Heal well chap. As long as you're ok. Bikes are just metal n plastic, can be replaced.

Broke my collar bone in the summer - it sucks. But, it heals faster than you might expect. Take all the pain killers they offer you...

Cheers for the heads up @edscoble have you had a play with the Klamper yet? Any justification on the premium over a BB7 considering it's a similar set up with one of the pads sat static.
@tyeness gutting news. Hoping you have some insurance cover to get what you are owed. Although most importantly wishing a full and swift recovery!

I would love to get the Klamper but can't see why I would spend a lots more over a CX77, nor the BB7 Road.
I read up that the road Klamper are excellent but MTB one are poor.
I find static pads calipers feel a lots better than dual pull one, it's lighter to pull and simple to fix and adjust.

Either put it in the bag or just get a smaller pump? A frame bag is gonna be hella more useful than a frame pump...

Shona's got a set on her bikepacking race bike thing, seems pretty happy with them.

• #194
Hmmm well when you put it like that it almost seems obvious! :D
@willhouse Thank you! I'm insured with Bikmo+ but havent called them yet, gonna give them a yell to get the ball rolling though!
-
• #195
Argh!! That's bloody awful!! I don't suppose you got number-plates/witnesses? Heal up well and quickly.
-
• #196
Nasty, Heal up quick.
-
• #197
@bigben thank you both!
No plates I'm afraid, nor witnesses. Police are appealing for witnesses and are gonna try a couple other avenues to find the vehicle as I can remember make, model, and colour but they've basically got nothing to work with so I'm not holding my breath!

Bike's now with the LBS who have done me a damage report. That combined with replacing my clothing sees a tidy £1100 worth of damage :(
Front wheel is pringled, amongst plenty of other damage. Frame's straight though, I am glad of the gusseted downtube.
Have filed a claim with Bikmo, so let's see what falls out of that. And as the doc wants me off the bike for at least 2 months, it isn't coming to Japan :(
I'm thinking about stripping and recoating - there's a few rust spots in the powdercoat, and signs of the beginnings of rust inside the frame - orange water dribbles out when it's moved around. I think it'd be prudent to use framesaver as I intend to have this bike as a daily/tourer for some time.
I do quite like the green, but it'd be silly not to consider other options. It's quite a utilitarian looking bike with the parts/build, and exposed welds etc, so I think "nice" or lighter/more delicate colours might not have quite the right vibe.
Ideas very much welcomed :)

How about burnt bronze like the 2015 croix de fer.
Inspired by your green croix de fer I decided to build some 650b wheels for my own. Previously I was running with Compass Barlow pass 700x38mm tyres (great tyres btw) but now have 650Bx42mm Panaracer Gravel King tyres for even more comfort. Took it off road toady and it handled really well. One of the benefits of 650b is I no longer have any toe overlap issues. Reckon I could fit a 650Bx48mm compass tyres too. Looking forward to riding the trans pennine trail on it in May.
