  • Finished rebuilding mine yesterday. 3 speed, rack, guards, brooks and knobbly tyres all added to make it more of an all rounder now I only have this and a road bike.

  • Which hub and shifter have you gone for, and how are you finding it?

  • Looks ace btw

  • It is possible to put gears on it ? Damn. How?

  • I imagine an internal geared hub in this case.

  • Yes, but 120mm wide?

  • Aren't most of the SA 3 speeds 120mm?

Pretty sure the ones they use on Bromptons are spaced down to 110mm (although I may be incorrect).

  • Yes, but 120mm wide?

Sturmey Archer 3-speeds are available in various sub-120mm OLN dimensions which can easily be shimmed out to 120mm precisely, or you can just stick a 116-119mm one in a 120mm frame and tighten up the nuts.

  • Pretty sure the ones they use on Bromptons are spaced down to 110mm

Bromptons have an S-RF3, there's a stock variant which is 108mm OLN. Brompton might get theirs with thicker washers, or they might just let their users enjoy a clearance, rather than interference, fit when they are putting their wheel back in.

  • Oh it's really helpful for me as I want to put gears on my pompino. It's a pretty good all-road bike, but the lack of gears is slowing me down.
Any idea of which hub I could use for a bit of "off road" use? Nothing too rough, it's more like singletracks than rocks.

S-A in 115mm - 120mm or other brand would be nice.
I know I could get a kaffenback instead, but you know... "Do your best with what you have"

  • It's got an SRF 3 in the back, matching front hub as well. It's 117mm out the box, and they sell a range of spacers and lock washers to space them out, although my frame took 117 without even seeming to pull the frame in.

It's running 42/17, which gives me around 65GI, with a 75% low gear, and a 133% high. I use it for canal paths, single track, across fields, and the hub and gearing is fine with that.

My girlfriend bought a Pashley last year that came with a three speed hub, and when going out with her, the Pomp always felt over geared (I think it was 48/16 or so). It's really opened up the bike for me, especially with guards and a rack.

The shifter is one of these, with a full length outer cable held on with some stick on cable stops, down to a fulcrum clip on the seat stay.

The only thing I don't like about the bike is the Tektro/XT brake set up feels rubbish.

  • Tektro/XT brake set up feels rubbish

I noticed xt v's earlier, aren't the Pomps still best setup with mini-v 'cos of pull ratio?

  • ^ they are. I've being facing up many issues on mine. No more problems since I put mini-V.

  • Would depend on the levers.

  • I was given the brakes when I built it, so bought the cheap levers to match. They are the Tektros for big v's. I'd like decent levers and some stopping power, whatever combination affords that.

  • That's odd that the v-brake versions of the Tektro don't marry up well. Maybe a bit of fetting with the v-brake set up?

What exactly is poor about the braking?

  • The brakes perform much in line with how I'd expect them to. It's more the feel of the levers and the way the cable moves that feels a bit crap.

  • So above pic road levers plus xt v's better with mini v's yeah? Are some road levers ok with some full v's? Is there a list?

I know someone with a similar braking predicament ya see...

  • ^^ thread refresh fail. Do they feel spongy / unresponsive?

  • Most road levers will pull mini v amounts of cable but some are made for full size v's, as for which ones I'd probably ask Google, or someone will tell you which tektro ones are usually recommended.

  • Are some road levers ok with some full v's?

I don't think so. I can say definitively xt and 5700 levers together are less confidence inspiring than dragging your feet. They are the exact opposite of modulation -nothing, nothing, nothing and full lock.

There are some premium Tektro mini v s that are optimised for shimano / Sram / campag.

  • Are some road levers ok with some full v's? Is there a list?

@edscoble probably knows, the only ones I can think of off the top of my head are DiaCompe 287V (the clue is in the name)

  • This is pretty much what I'm looking at for my other half's bike. There are a few 120mm internal hubs.
Didn't the OLN spacing change after V1? I seem to remember they used to be 130mm @Khornight2?

  • Road lever for full size v's:
    Tektro rl520
Cane Creek Drop V (same guts as above, nicer hood, twice the price)
    Dia Compe 'tester mentioned

If you want to stick with STI levers you'll need to stick a travel agent on each brake or go for mini v or cantis (ewwww)

  • Ta for all the info folks, makes sense I think :)
