Which Tyres?

  • why on earth would you put a shit tyre on a disc? does it not completely defeat the point in using a disc in the first place?

  • Awesome. For some reason I didn't see those before...perfect for what I need. Thanks

  • I didn't say don't ride tubs.

  • The cheap tyre on the disc is only temporary....I'll be going to a nicer Vittoria before summer hits. I just need a temporary solution for the time being.

It's just an old HED disc from the early 90's that I paid next to nothing for....nothing fancy.

  • See the tubeless tyre thread

I reckon I got about six thousand miles out of my front Schwalbe one.

  • Vittoria Rally and Conti Giros are awful, and suspect they're more or less the same tyre. Lumpy around the valve with no puncture protection.
Even though the more expensive gumwall tubulars from Vittoria, Challenge, Veloflex etc are much nicer, they're still fragile. I was getting <500miles on City streets from 320tpi Vittoria Corsa Evo CX before they where cut to shreds.
I strongly suggest ditching the gumwall idea. Conti Sprinter tubulars are fine for city streets and are reasonably priced. Cheaper is the Schwalbe Lugano, but I've not tried those.

If you absolutely must have gumwalls cheaply, I suggest adding sealant and keeping your fingers crossed.

    cc/ @Dick

  • Tnkx @amey 😒

    Bontrager RL it is then

  • Thanks.
What about these Challenge Vulcano's? These seem absolutely perfect but I can't seem to find anyone that sells the tan sidewall version.

I may just bite the bullet and opt for the Veloflex Roubaix.

Yeah, the Gatorskin Sprints are perfect...just wish they came in different colors.

  • This bike seems to appear in every thread I scroll through... Is it a magician?

  • Have a browse through the tubs thread, mostly clincher-chat here.

  • LOL...sorry, I was trying to explain the rear wheel was one of the old HED's that can be had for not alot. Think the bike was in the Rat and HHSB threads.

If someone was talking about mounting a cheap tub on a $1000+ Zipp disc, I would think they're mad.

Thanks for the heads up about the tub thread...I had no idea there was one.

  • can't run veloflex on carbon clinchers

  • At what mileage do I replace Kojaks?

  • When they're worn out.

  • How do I know? I think the sidewall is dying .. pics incoming.

  • I've got myself a set of 38mm crabons with a 17.5mm internal rim diameter. Got some 25 mm GP4000s on there atm and they are coming up at about 27mm. They are a little worn and I'm looking to replace - should I go 23 (is there an aero gain?) or 25mm (assume more comfortable)?

I assume it doesn't matter as I won't notice any aero difference.

  • I wonder if that's still a problem with Veloflex on carbon clinchers ?

Carbon clincher rims seem to have come on a bit since the early days. I believe it was due to the sharp hook on some rims cutting through the thin sidewall on the tyre ?

  • 23mm

    Betamax

    Mini Disc

  • VF only introduced that "ban" last year.

  • Yeah that's where I'd kind of landed

  • If anyone gives you any shit, just make an oblique reference to Crr and tap the side of your nose...

  • Rally is super resistant running rather low pressures - double rallys on the pic

  • Vittoria Rally and Conti Giros are awful, and suspect they're more or less the same tyre.

The Conti Giros are made by Lion Tyre so they do share a lot of "jeans". Crap. Ride poorly, are heavy and seem to be more prone to flats than pretty much anything I've tried-- and I used to ride a lot of oddball cheap "training tyres" back when I was a kid. The cheapest "training" tyre worth purchasing is-- and has been for more than 25 years-- the Continental Sprinter. Today's Sprinters are even better than there were back then.. They can be purchased for ~30 EUROs. Get the standard NOT the Gatorskin!

  • 23mm

Still the standard tyre width in the Peleton-- and for good reason.

    Betamax

Might as well add the Video2000 consortium... and keep in mind that the technically inferior format that got the most in demand content (Pornos of which Max Grundig refused to allow) won: VHS.
(but again who needed good quality to look at carbuncles).
All now obsolete-- just as DVDs-- by video-on-demand (Netflix etc.). Blockbuster might have had 9000 stores in 2004 but... Sure there are still a handfull of DVD/Video etc. shops still around but at this point in the game it's easier to find vinyl LPs save those DVDs at the supermarket of 6 month old film releases..

    Mini Disc

Leaving off the poor timing.. It failings was the increasing taste for compressed dynamic range (MP3) amongst it target customers that killed it.. at the other end it was not good enough to compete with hard-drive (and later Flashdisc) recorders for quality..
