That and excellent chrome plating - i believe older frames used a stronger chemical bath to achieve the plating that has since been discontinued due to high polution.. i might be wrong.
Indeed Cr6 (Hexavalent Chromium) banned under the RoHS directive over 10years ago.
Back in the 70s/80s a lot of italian builders were chrome plating and putting a coloured lacquer over it - Chromovelato
