Which Groupset?

Could I just change shifters/cassette/derraileurs and leave the chainset as is?

Yes: chains only got narrower internally once, when nine speed was introduced (from 3/32" to 11/128"), so a ten speed chain (which you'll need for the cassette) will work fine with nine speed rings.

8-11 should all be mix and match.

Single to Eight speed will all work on the same chain, but from nine speed you have to use either the appropriate chain or one from a higher range of gears.

For example, with a nine speed group you could use a nine, ten or eleven speed chain but a ten speed group can't use a nine speed chain.

Ah yes, forgot to say I'd also swap the chain for a 10 to match the cassette.

The new crank design from Chorus/Record/Super Record actually looks ok in alloy. However its Power Torque.
Sounds as though it's purely designed for the OEM market to give bike companies a third option along with Veloce and Athena.

It is designed for the OEM in general to regain ground lost to Shimano.

What they really need to do is to step up Veloce which now look and feel lacking compared to the new Tiagra 4700 (in current competitor to Veloce).

Campag should just go back to 10spd and Ultratorque. Everything else since has been wank.

I had a bike with 10spd Ultratorque Veloce (before it got stolen), great groupset.
It's rubbish that they keep Ultratorque for Chorus upwards now, that Powertorque system is awful.

Shimano are really good at trickle down from their high-end groupsets - the new Sora looks like Dura-Ace from a few years back. Campagnolo on the other hand seem to either trickle stuff up to their high-end groupsets, or purposely nerf the low/mid range to make their high end more attractive.

Power torque with a self extracting bolt looks like they've addressed the major issue.

It doesn't seem very long ago that Shimano cranks were fugly and Campag ones quite pretty. How times have changed.

The new Sora should in theory feel like the Tiagra 4700 shifter rather than the wet and murky shifting feel of the current Sora, it's a very good move by Shimano as the newer levers have a different cable pull that'll work better with disc brakes.

This mean that they can get away with normal Shimano housing for a decent feel.

Only thing left is to move the Claris shift design to the 7 speed one.

Disappointed with Potenza, don't really want the mainstream using Campag. It's too premium for crows

Can't remember which article I read but it seemed to suggest this new groupset is entirely replacing Athena.

Though Campagnolo had an existing mid-range 11-speed group, Athena, the decision was made to create a new group, rather than redesign an existing one. I did ask why a new group was considered preferable to updating Athena, and I didn’t get a very clear answer.

Athena is £399 on Ribble at the moment, Ultegra is £449.95.
Campagnolo talk about Potenza being Ultegra pricing + 'Campagnolo Soul Tax'.

Name change is to hide the fact they've jacked up the price of Athena by around £100 ? Sure it's got a fixed Powertorque and some trickle down features from Chorus etc, but Shimano generally do that and keep the price the same.

Bullshit: since when has Ultegra been mid-range?

By claiming that Polenta is on a par with Ultegra, the inference is that Chorus, Record and Super Record are superior to Ultegra and therefore that SR, at least, is superior to Dura Ace.

This is marketing wank, not mechanical win.
