  • I'm staying with a local so she'll be able to help me out I'm sure. thanks for the tip.

  • Pls milk her for her recommendations on best:

    • wonton noodle house
    • roast pork bun
    • massage therapist
    • cocktail bar
    • private pool
    • island beach

    then report back!!! please!

  • roger roger

  • picked a bad time to go to HK I think. Rainy season just started. No chance of any good views of anything because the cloud was so low every day. I wasn't very keen on the place if I'm honest.

  • It's grim.

  • can anyone help. possibility of moving to Hong Kong, looking to get rental place out there Kowloon side but i have no idea of areas, good bad cheap or expensive, can anyone point me in the right direction. visited along time ago but only for holiday.

  • @blowfish would know.

Ah you're going mainland. I've stayed in Jordan TST a few times and liked the more local feel of the mainland side vs the island.

If I was moving there, I'd be considering:
where my friends live (or colleagues, if you dont have anyone out there)
    where my work is
    Proximity to park
the way to get to the beach
proximity to my local street market
    Good wonton shop
    Good coffee shop

*I should add a lot of expats live on island side and my family are in north point so I've only 'holidayed' in Jordan.

    Good luck.

  • I'm an 'islander' unfortunately.. Personally would love to live on the western end of the island.. Where they've extended the metro line to HKU.. Might be affordable if renting
On the other side of the harbour a lot of my friends with families now have moved to Hang Hau etc (eastern end of the green line) because its more affordable.. If you like countryside that's also a stone's throw from Sai Kung.
Around Olympic Station could be good.. Used to be a queiter area right next to MongKok but now getting a bit hip but also being redeveloped a lot at the same time

  • meanwhile this is literally a phone call with my mother....

  • Haha!! Awesome

  • Thanks for the replys its great info - looks 80% to be happening and my better half is now thinking the island may be the way to go ! We have family in Kowloon Tong and work is going to be near ocean park, I may have more questions to come but ill try not to bore you too much !

    Good wonton shop - chek
    Good coffee shop - chek

    thanks agin

  • Hello little update, landed in HK ad flat search has begun, Missis wants to live by tai Hang / causeway bay area, the humidity is mental but im enjoying it so far. ill be asking many stupid newbie questions i hope i won't bore you too much. Rich

  • @RichG Coming over for a week on Friday. Any hints?

  • Dredge. Will be visiting my brother in HK in a few weeks and am looking for shops to source a few bike parts, functional stuff like dynamo lights, front racks, wide range cassettes etc. Rest of family uninterested in this so would like to have some accuracy to save time. Anyone?

  • I haven't been to Hong Kong for a few years,
    but,
on Hong Kong Island, between Causeway Bay and Central, I only found one bike shop that had anything beyond folders. I'll try to find the address for you.

  • Very kind of you. I basically figure a lot of eBay/AliExpress sellers are HK based so some stuff must be sold locally somewhere. Customs have become very strict here (Sweden) so not much point ordering small things from asia anymore. Which was their main idea i suppose :)

  • I don't think that's the case. You might find some things in Shenzhen which is across from HK but you'll struggle if you don't really know what you're looking for.

  • Both myself & mespilus jr. have failed to find the bike shop we visited.
We were staying in the Hotel Pennington, and we wandered along the road, uphill from there,
maybe as far as Leighton Road, but Google Maps is not showing any sign of a bike shop along there,
nor does a Google search show a bike shop in the area.
A whole block could easily have been redevelopped!

  • Thanks anyway, will see what I stumble upon when I'm there.

  • Sky Blue Bikes on Queen's Road West have some pretty snazzy stuff in stock, they've relocated to this address since I was last there but it was worth a look in the last time anyway.

Velo 6 on On Wo Lane in Central looks pretty neat but I haven't been there, will check out next week when I'm over.

There's a Rapha on Sai Street in Sheung Wan too. Worth dropping in for a coffee and asking where best to find any bits you might be after as I'm sure the staff and customers would know any good shops?

  • don't for get flying ball cycles in Lai Chi kok, and bull bikes in yau ma tei.

the Ali express stuff doesn't really filter in to decent bike shops here some markets esp Sam shui po has lights but more the tactical torch type with bike mount.

there is also a specialised concept shop cant remember where it is though,
As said above sky blue are nice and I can also recommend flying ball for a look but it's a bit out the way.

Sky blue do a good hire bikes if you want a ride.

I really say that you get better price deals in the UK on items.

Have a great time in HK.

  • Sweet, thanks everyone for the tips!

  • A lot of them just have offices in HK, the actual products are all in Shenzen or similar and never hit HK.

  • Just been into Sky Blue Bikes and they've just moved into a new location so there wasn't an awful lot on display.
Their stock is absolutely top notch pornworthy though. Bare carbon Parlee. Litespeed gravel bikes. Alchemy roadies. Lots of BMC and "normal" stuff too.
Sadly not the silly lightweight bottle cages I had somehow convinced myself I remembered seeing on their website but I'll get over it.

Velo 6 is almost more like a Freitag pop up than a proper bike shop but the few bits that did have were pretty nice to be fair. They've a lovely Passoni frameset up on the wall and some cool carbon fibre bits and pieces.

The new Rapha location doesn't have coffee. That is all.
