    That's interlacing. See my earlier comments - it's traditional, but not strictly necessary.

    It's grounds for complaint, there's no excuse to have wind-up in bladed spokes*, but a CX-Ray can be wound up further than that without suffering damage.

    *There's no excuse for it with round spokes either, but it's very easy to avoid with CX/CX-Ray as Sapim actually make a spoke holding tool for them.
