    How speed specific are chainsets?

    Specific example - partner's bike is currently 9 speed. Considering adding the nice new Tiagra 10 speed kit. Could I just change shifters/cassette/derraileurs and leave the chainset as is?

    Or are the chainrings thinner to account for the thinner chain?

    Generally not very. You should be able to run most on any combination. 8-11 should all be mix and match.

    Single to Eight speed will all work on the same chain, but from nine speed you have to use either the appropriate chain or one from a higher range of gears.

    For example, with a nine speed group you could use a nine, ten or eleven speed chain but a ten speed group can't use a nine speed chain.
