  • I've had a nice 90s Rotel amp for years but up until July had been using my girlfriend's speakers and record player. Finally got all of my stuff out of storage and just needed new speakers, got some Celestion DL8s for cheap off eBay. They look brand new, must have been taken really good care of! Just need to get my record player from my Mum's house and I'm good to go.

  • Cheers! That's the answer I was hoping for.

  • Yey! You got 'em. Woofer Surrounds and tweeters checked out OK then?

  • I've not had a chance to try them yet, been away from home with work since the day they arrived!

  • Does anyone have a recommendation for a turntable at the 100 pound mark, without a built in pre-amp?

I've just picked up a Pioneer A-109 for my budget build, it's likely I'll get some Wharfedale 9.0's to go with it.

  • MOAR advice needed...
My Beogram 1203 and 1200 are both a bit temperamental.
I have found someone reputable who can repair one of them at least, for around £100.
Another guy, can do it for £200 and offers a 12 mont guarantee.
I'm not even sure if its worth sinking more money into these beautiful decks as the stylus are proprietary and only going up in price second hand.
Or should I just get something new?
Or something classic British second hand?

  • How about an original Rega Planar 2? Same vintage as your A60, matchy matchy walnut surround...

New belt and cartridge, and you're good to go. Or, for less effort, a new RP1 would be excellent.

  • Oh god. Thats amazing. Is it yours? For sells? Also, daft question, but how do these type of record players work? When my Beogram works I just hit a button and it spins and picks up, puts down, plays though, and lifts and returns...

  • Not mine, but from this ebay auction - I'd given up looking. That's top money for a good listing of one in excellent shape - avoid any that aren't, as the anti-skating / lift on that arm can be a problem, apparently.

Press the button front left, platter spins, move the arm on and off the record manually with or without the lift, speed change by removing the platter and moving the belt. Same for all Regas.

  • You just need to get used to manual cueing i.e. placing the needle over the groove. They have a tonearm lift.

  • you use your fingers to lift the arm, move it over and flip the arm lift to gently place it on the record.

the arm has counterbalance weights so you can fine tune stylus pressure

  • Phew. I was going to be furious, as I would have had to buy it from you.
Looks like its sold too. Also good. £200 odd ya say? Not too bad.
With or without lift? What happens at the end of the record? My current one just picks up, returns and shuts off...

  • I'm pretty shit with analogue stuff.
I remember trying to get something else working a while back, maybe another turntable, my wife and I were like chimps just pressing random bits and giving it gentle knocks.
Of course I have audio streaming throughout my entire flat with every device connected and wirelessly backed up, but these physical buttons are real mind blowers...

  • Instant gear lust. Will keep ann eye out for one of these.

  • What happens at the end of the record?

incredible as it may seem, you lift the arm and return it to its cradle

  • So you have to watch it come to an end? What would happen if I just left it going?

  • Lets not get in a bidding war...

  • There's an infinite groove at the end of the record that the needle just sits in until you remove it. Some older records just send the needle crashing in to the label though.

  • and, if you do get a Rega, consider the Nagaoka MP11 MM cartridge, a very capable unit for a budget price

  • Those early Planar 2s seem to have gone up in price since I last looked. Plenty around, but I'd only buy one I could collect and see/hear, and never found one that nice.

  • Right.
If I get one it needs to be walnut to match.
Am I about to enter a rabbit hole?
    I blame you.
    As will my wife.
Those Leaks are quite nice too ey?

  • Do it, it's not a lot of dough really for a nice TT.

  • I do have a minty Ariston RD80SL with Linn LVX... if only I could be arsed to get my Lenco running I might move it on.
