• So... Tracking autofocus...

Is this available on a sub £1,500 body? I see the new Canon has it, would be mega useful... But it's gonna be AU$12,000... Nope...

  • I assume you're talking about the 1DX mkii... Yeah, its mega-bucks.
For video, you're probably better off with the 80D which has the tracking focus and touch screen but also, being a crop sensor, should have less rolling-shutter effects than a full-frame. It doesn't do 4k though, if that matters. Also, it's a Canon.

If that is too pricey, its predecessor, the 70D also does the tracking focus thing.

I think Canon have dropped the ball in the market they basically defined with the 5D mkii. Since then, they have just made really half-arsed efforts in order to protect their cinema line. Meanwhile, Sony have been making point and shoots with better video but horrible ergonomics and battery life (for video).

  • That's great info, man, thanks!

And so much more affordable... 😋

  • I'll second this @>>>>>> we're using Sony a lot more these days for simple video. If it's talking heads type stuff where you're not going to need to do much manual operation then a Sony A7Sii (or even the original A7S which is about half the price) is a sterling bit of kit.

Alternatively there's a new one around the corner called the A6300 which is dead cheap by comparison, has breathtaking autofocus, internal 4k etc.. the biggest drawback I can see is it doesn't have a headphone jack but often you'd record audio off board anyway.

What kind of work are you intending to do with it?

Regarding a trip up to KL. It is a fair bit cheaper yes. I can put you in touch with a producer friend of mine based in KL who will have a more up to date line on how much kit is and where's best to get it from if it helps?

Whether it's cheap enough to warrant a flight and a few good feeds is another thing. You might end up spending the same but... crab.
