  • Nope, I want blingy. Well, utilitarian is fine for the hub, but the finish needs to be properly polished. I could get one of them polished up by a machine shop I suppose. Either that or someone convinces me of the merits of cartridge bearings.

    Apart from the wrong bearings and the absence of a disc mount, that's exactly what @Silly_Savage was after :-)

    Cartridge bearings have merits.
    Is that convincing enough?

    I wouldn't let the difference between swings and roundabouts be a deal breaker when choosing a hub. Of course, I also wouldn't let shininess be a deciding factor...

  • I'm just making my first foray into wheelbuilding. I'm bulk building 20" wheels for my pedalcar team. All side mount so thankfully no need for dishing and I've got the hang of lacing and getting started on tensioning and truing.

    However, without an experienced person present to guide me through the process I'm a little unsure on how well I'm doing on those final stages to get the wheel finished. I suspect that the manual drilling on the purpose built hubs along with the budget rims is affecting the final outcome. However I can't seem to knock out the last little wobble on vertical truing. Horizontal truing is pretty damn close.

    Having only ever trued 700c wheels before, I'm just wondering whether it would be normal for 20" to be a bit harder to work with?
    Also, while the spokes are under tension, there is a bit of flex in them when I squeeze a crossed pair. I know I won't completely remove that but should I be tightening them up so the flex is very minimal? Or is a bit of flex OK as long as the tension all round is even?

    I'm just cautious of overdoing it.

  • I could imagine that working with a smaller circle, the same amount of variance in tension would produce a more noticeable hop. Have also read that anything < 1/2 mm isn't worth worrying about, and I'd guess that holds even more true for something using 4 wheels as opposed to two

  • I'm certainly less worried about the horizontal truing because the front wheels don't have brakes and the rear wheels have discs that are mounted on the drive shaft.

    What I really want to do is reduce, as far as possible, the amount of spokes that get broken during the course of racing. The flange is already a bit on the thin side so I'm going to recommend the future hubs are milled with at least an extra mm to make the spoke seat better.

    If you're going cheap large flange, a 525 might be easier to polish as you don't have flange cut-outs or the back relief on the brake rotor mount to worry about. If you're a real tart, get both because I think the better quality XT guts should drop straight into the easy-polish Deore shell :-)

  • Good shout. Well I already have the 756 in a wheel, so going to take it to the polishing shop and see what they say. Velosolo managed it, but unfortunately don't sell them anymore.

  • Novatec do thd d711 and d712 in silver. They are available in the u.k just talk to a shop with a whiskers account.

  • I am on holiday in malta escaping to cold dreary weather. Back on the 14th. I was back on my bike 1 week and 1 day after 6 hours of surgury to fix the injuries. So yes i heal very quickly.

  • Is this normal? Just got my Ryde Pulse Sprint - Superstar hubs - CX Rays in the post. Several spokes on the front wheel are twisted - I know this isn't ok, can it be fixed or has the spoke been permanently damaged? Probably a maximum of 120ยบ on any one spoke.

    The spokes on the rear cross over just after leaving the hub, but they bend around each other at an alarming angle. Is this correct for 2x lacing?

    I'm tempted to send them back right off the bat as with such a lightweight build any chance of poor building technique doesn't bode well, but they are a custom build, and Superstar Components customer service is not exactly known for being prompt and understanding.
