  • What else can I try?

Also, get your goals and plans to reach them written down then ask a coach to review it all if not already done so. Could be some simple changes they suggest that'll help in short term then help you develop plans for future/changing goals. Might be financial costs involved, and defo helps to find the right coach for you, they're like shoes and you want the pair that fit.

  • new (red) trainers.

Good call, faster & will hide the tomato juice.

  • Every club I've ever been to (a few now) have always been welcoming to everyone of any ability. In fact I think all the clubs I've trained at have had groups for absolute beginners and seeing as you've done plenty of running you'll have no problems finding a group for you.

  • I ran home from work today - well, I ran the first 10k then walked the rest if I'm honest.

Serves me right for not running further than 5k for time.

  • Looking to get new running headphones. Any blue-tooth recommendations for up to £50. Not too concerned about sound quality I listen to trash anyway, just want something that's stick in my ears.

  • I have been surprised by the quality of these.

As in they are better than the £13 suggests. good enough to run with, wouldn't have them as my main headphones tho.

  • That's what I'm using now. Still seem to slip and slide out after about 3km. Sound quality wise they're great for the price though.

  • Ran into work today, Garmin cheerfully informed me that I could exercise again in 3 days, based on HR variability from today.

  • I understand the recommendation for recovery is before you can do high intensity effectively, endurance stuff is fine in the interim.

  • Totally hadn't thought about the free speed given by red trainers - looks like I'm going to have to go shopping at the weekend...
I'll also investigate getting a coach. Thanks again everyone, I'm feeling much more cheery today.

  • With all this talk of joining a club I thought I'd look up some local clubs. They all have a one off joining fee, plus annual membership, plus a small fee for each training session. Does this mean to join a club I'm looking at paying the one off joining fee and the annual membership up front?

  • Depends on the club. GT (mentioned above) is an annual fee only - no joining fee or fee per session.

Clubs I've looked at where I am now in North London seem to ask for a joining fee and/or much more hefty annual fee. Would actually be cheaper rejoining GT as first claim and joining Highgate Harriers as second claim than just joining HH. Go figure.

I've only seen fees per session in places where they've got to pay to hire the track, which is fair enough. Haven't seen them charged to members when the session is in the park.

  • run dem has a season fee of £20 every 3/4 months and sessions are free, but we're ramping up for mile 21 celebrations for vmlm and we're hosting runners from all over the world for our hackney half 'bridge the gap' event so we have a £2 bag at each run to help fill the coffers as we've cut all ties to nike now and are operating 100% independently again, post run parties don't pay for themselves.

  • Just found a great wee hack. You can join Vegan Runners for £6 a year, then find a club that does a cheap rate for second claim and train with them e.g. for Highgate, you'd pay a total of £31 a year (£6 + £25 second claim rate), rather than £65.

  • there were tons of vegan runners at brighton half this weekend. lots of them near the front of the field too.

  • I'm entered for the Victoria Park 10k on saturday... Haven't run at all for a few weeks, but I've done a lot more riding than usual including sportives for the last 2 sundays and am lighter and fitter (on the bike) than I've been for ages. The last run I did, I managed a 23minute 5k..... am I crazy to try for a 50 minute 10k??

  • Yeah, but Brighton tho...

Steves - you'd be crazy not to try for a 50m 10k. Death or glory, amigo.

  • That's the answer I was looking for.... I think!

  • Nah just turn up and run dem.
Chat to folks and check it out no one's gonna piss you off turning up in kit for action.
    Join later when you've decided

Sidelined as of today, unknown time as yet, nice read ^ motivation to get back but only when properly ready. No scenic Peaks run on Sat, no fell race Sunday.

  • Early days, but I'm hoping I've just discovered my new favourite running shoes.

    Adidas Supernova Glide Boost 7.

I've been happily racing with Boost under the foot (Adios for 5k/10k, Boston for HM/marathon) and have been searching for a suitable complement for training, i.e. something a little more cushioned for long mileage comfort. Tried the UltraBoost, but they were just tooo cushioned for me and lacked stability that I need. So far (a whole four mile test run) the Glide Boost appear to be the Goldilocks Boost for training; a plush, bouncy, cushioned feel, but just firm enough to feel what's going on when the foot lands. They just feel so comfortable when I slip them on. And obviously, what they look like is the most important thing. Red is the fastest colour but I'll save that for race day. For training I reckon these look pretty cool. :)

  • oooh, glide boost

  • You guys have more than one pair of running shoes?

I had a really nice run yesterday. Been struggling with lead legs and cold/flu/whatever for a couple of weeks so have missed some training runs to rest up but the legs came back yesterday! Did 5 miles with a few intervals around a local park, nothing too structured just faster for a bit slower for a bit. Nice to have some spring in my step! Will run slowly to park run with the gf tomorrow, run park run (fast, hopefully), and run home slowly with the gf again for a nice 8 miler, then I'm looking at 18 on Sunday. Longest ever run ever!
