Another vote for the D500, even though it's not even out yet. If it's anywhere as good as the D300 it should keep you going for 20 years.

Don't skimp on a tripod. Everyone does that and ends up buying twice.

Thanks... I'll probably be back to ask about lenses, tho' I'm pretty sure I know what I want on that score...
