  • ^ I did not know! Ace!!

  • Nice. Just ordered the MX-1 for a super cheap price at bax-shop. Thanks @EB @Dramatic_Hammer

  • MX-1 using the FX on the PC channel, so everything coming out of Ableton through the master on the mixer. Love the flange!

  • ^ that turned into this - see what you think cheers

  • Very nice!

Ok so I've connected the MX-1 to MacBook Pro via USB. Set the MX-1 to external mode. Launch ableton and the MX-1 isn't visible in preferences as an audio device. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

  • I had to set up a chain in Mac MIDI settings - I'll take a screen shot and see if I can find the link

  • check this in the meantime - in audio prefs in Ableton set your in's and outs as shown

  • Did you installs the driver?

    https://www.roland.co.uk/support/by_product/mx-1/updates_drivers

In the readme file in the driver package it explains how to set up your chain in MIDI studio, as per below

drag the up/down arrows indicating the input/output port to make the following connections.
The 1st ▲/▼ of the "MX-1" to the ▲/▼ of the added "MX-1"
The 2nd ▲/▼ of the "MX-1" to the ▲/▼ of the added "MX-1 CTRL"
    The 3rd ▲/▼ of the "MX-1" to the ▲/▼ of the added "MX-1 USB1"
The 4th ▲/▼ of the "MX-1" to the ▲/▼ of the added "MX-1 USB1 CTRL"
    The 5th ▲/▼ of the "MX-1" to the ▲/▼ of the added "MX-1 USB2"
The 6th ▲/▼ of the "MX-1" to the ▲/▼ of the added "MX-1 USB2 CTRL"
    The 7th ▲/▼ of the "MX-1" to the ▲/▼ of the added "MX-1 USB3"
The 8th ▲/▼ of the "MX-1" to the ▲/▼ of the added "MX-1 USB3 CTRL"
    The 9th ▲/▼ of the "MX-1" to the ▲/▼ of the added "MX-1 USB4"
The 10th ▲/▼ of the "MX-1" to the ▲/▼ of the added "MX-1 USB4 CTRL"

  • yep that was it - patch update to the MX-1 and then reapply usb drivers. Let the knob twiddling commence

  • Picked up a cheap 'broken' Presonus Faderport from ebay... Updated the firmware and drivers, checked all the internal ribbon connectors were seated correctly and it works perfectly, hurray!
I had a behringer motorised fader bank before but the touch-sensitive part of this makes writing/re-writing automation so much easier and the transport controls are very snappy. No lag as with some products I've tried in the past.
Whether or not it actually improves my workflow we will see, but it's a massive improvement on trying to control virtual faders with a mouse!

  • Niiiiice! How much was it on ebay? I love Push 2 but it still doesn't really work well in arrangement view, more a session view tool

  • I had another very quick session the other day using the Aira gear plus the Waldorf Blofeld on synth duties, just a throw together really

  • 43 clams, mint condition - even had the stickers and start guides/etc in the box!

Controllers are difficult to get right, I've tried loads and not been totally happy with any. I think half the problem is everyone uses the software in a slightly different way, which may not translate perfectly to the hardware design and without completely integrated, bespoke hardware you're left with generic buttons that do different things in different programs. Plus you need to take time to learn the hardware layout before it feels comfy... Hopefully the simplicity of the faderport should speed all that up.

  • I know Simon Stokes (Petrichor) whose live set is brilliant still uses a Korg Nanokontrol alongside Push, even though Push is the heart of his setup, he uses the Nanokontrol for dedicated send throws, things like that - speaking of which check this video - superb (although looks like he's not using a Nanokontrol!!)

  • Just recorded at Rak Studios this week end. Heard from studio assistants that the Pixies were recording next door. Saw the guys chilling outside. Priceless

  • nice! but no Kim Deal, no pixies

  • She's always been in and out hasn't she?
    Man Franck Black! :-)

  • Went to see the Pixies sans Kim a couple of years ago. Went in thinking "Meh. No Kim".It was one of the best gigs I've ever seen. Fucking phenomenal.

Rak looks amazing. Always wanted to visit. What band are you in @SamDev

  • little production work in progress walkthrough video from me

  • I am mostly doing studio session gigs for various projects.
Otherwise i play bass for those guys at the moment

  • I like the Blofeld one, Jason. Also don't forget to clear the pattern, Jason!

Opinions: I requested some stems from an album of a harpist/vocalist I know- just for messing with seeing as I've been forcing the time with my gear and getting into it. She sensibly asked what arrangement we'd come to over payments in the event anything was made and took off (something I just can't see happening). What kind of number do I go with?

  • Sorry if either are reposts:

And I just can't get enough of this:

Would love to know how much is modular vs tracks on the laptop. How much does the laptop contribute to the modular songs in themselves?

  • Anyone on the money question above?

  • large chunky audio loops on the laptop suggest to me he is playing the modular stuff on top of basic tracks / rhythms triggering midi out of laptop , looks like they are all set out as an arrangement but i might be wrong . i dont see why you would use both unless he couldn't bring his whole modular studio down .....octatrack suggests same thing !
