  • An iPhone has a faster lens and more sophisticated sensor than a GR. It is obviously far smaller but stabilised.

    So compacts over phones have...

    • Traditional handling
    • A reduced depth of field
    • They don't start ringing when you're using them :-)

    That's all, and the gap is narrowing.

  • More sophistiated sensor? It's a fraction of the GR sensor, and smears detail like a motherfucker. The photo I posted for the last challenge I couldn't have taken with an iPhone for shit. Yes, the cameras in phones are getting better, and yes, a photo taken on a phone is just as valid. But this whole 'small cameras are dead' thing I don't buy. Sure, for some people a phone is all they need. But there's still a difference.

    Yes, smartphone CMOS sensors get all the r&d. This is how they manage to perform better than the sensor size would suggest.
