We got a new puppy over the weekend. He had been in a crate before so no issues with his new sleeping arrangements, although when I tried to go to bed we had a lot of crying.
My approach was as follows:
- Quietly sit next to crate until Loki was settled.
- Stand up, walk away a few paces, and then immediately come back
- Wait a while, stand up walk further away and then come back
- Wait, then walk to the kitchen door, go through out of sight, come straight back
- Next time, waited 15 seconds before coming back
- Gradually extended the period until I was out for about 15 minutes
- Went to bed.
My thinking was to come back before he cries out, but gradually extend so he understands that I will come back. It seemed to work.

Hazel and Sochi
Minding my friends 2 yr old cockapoo while she's skiing. Sochi is a very nice, well behaved dog normally.
But has separation anxiety, with me! When I go upstairs, ie. to the loo even, she whines and at night, when I've gone up to bed, she's whiny and barks - just single barks. Woof....Woof.....Woof.
Any tips? Been ignoring it, is that the way?
Hazel is fine with me leaving her at night, she's used to it.
