'We like lists because we don’t want to die.' Tee Shirts

  • Yesterday, on hearing about the death of Umberto Eco, I posted the following quote in the RIP thread:

How does a person feel when looking at the sky? He thinks that he doesn’t have enough tongues to describe what he sees. Nevertheless, people have never stopping describing the sky, simply listing what they see... We have a limit, a very discouraging, humiliating limit: death. That’s why we like all the things that we assume have no limits and, therefore, no end. It’s a way of escaping thoughts about death. We like lists because we don’t want to die.

Subsequent discussion revealed that the last line; 'We like lists because we don't want to die', might look good on a Tee Shirt.

Not long after, a list appeared:

"We like lists because we don’t want to die." t-shirt:

    1) Jingle_Jangle
    2) Scilly.Suffolk
    3) b&d
    4) johnnyhotdog

In a nice refinement, @EB suggested that the Tee Shirt be produced with the list printed on it, a bit like tour dates.

So there you go. If the list gets up to 10 names, I will put the shirt into production.

As I've never done this before, I can't give an accurate cost at this stage. I will cover the 'set-up' costs, so whatever it is, I will only charge the cost of the T.

    Any interest?

  • Nice work!

Happy to chip in with set-up costs.

Do you have a design or are you going to twist a forum arm?

  • I don't have a design, but was thinking 'We like lists because we don’t want to die' on the front, then the full quote, attributed to Umberto Eco on the back, along with the list of names.

If someone on the Forum wants to do a design, that would be cool (I can imagine someone agonising over a font).

There is a place near me that prints T Shirts on a fairly large commercial basis, I was going to pop in and see them one day about the set-up costs. As far as I know it involves having a silk-screen or similar produced.

I'm a bit in the dark, but that's the fun of it.

  • I think it needs LFGSS on there to put it into context, so we should get the nod from @Velocio as a courtesy.

I'll mention this in the designers' thread and see if anyone bites...

  • I'll take one. 1) Jingle_Jangle

    8) bazschmaz ( small please)

  • No need to ask for a nod, go for it.

If from that people choose to make part of any profit a donation, then cool. But also not necessary (but this is how other LFGSS merch has operated even though there was no "rule" for that).

  • There will be no profit on this, as I'm doing it for shits and giggles.

It has come about so fast I didn't really think about the rights and wrongs, but as this will exclusively be a Forum thing, I'll add a mandatory £2.00 forum donation to the cost of each shirt.

You might also want to add your name to the list Guvnor. I will do you one FOC because 'without whom none of this' etc..

  • Not sure how the tshirt printing places work, but if you provide the tees, down Cheshire street most Sundays are the guys selling Fruit-of-the-Loom tees and stuff for £1 each. I'm definitely a Small in their knock offs, and a year later the merch from them is still good. Gotta check them over for loose threads and holes, but it may be a good place to grab the t-shirts if people want different sizes and colours.

  • You can also buy blanks from here: http://store.baroneclothing.com/ the American Apparel AA001 is a very good blank in good sizes.

  • That's it, we've broken the magic 10.

Looks like I'm going to have to make this happen.

    Will report back asap.

  • Size M please. :)

  • @Jingle_Jangle can I join or was 10 the limit?

  • Course you can join.

10 was the minimum requirement to make it worth doing.

I now need to find a design / layout, and a firm to produce the T's.

Hopefully, I will be able to find a firm that holds a stock of sizes & colours, so people can choose not only their size, but also the colour they prefer.

If anyone can recommend a firm, let me know.

  • 5th column do tee printing but I think they have minimum 50 order but you can mix sizes
