Data recovery. anyone know of anywhere that isn't going to cost me a fortune to try and recover data from a laptop HD?

How do you usually spell Stephie in German?
Cheers.

Stephie auf Deutsch
Do you mean like:

That depends on why you are unable to extract the data.
If you're lucky, you can recover using software - zero assumption recovery is my go-to app for this.
If you need something a little more base, you may find that the disk manufacturer provides recovery software.
If you go to a shop that does software recovery, be sure to insist that they do not open the drives. They are very likely not set up to do this, ands can easily ruin the disk for future attempts.
If it's (non-platter) hardware related, a donor drive may be of use - the platters can be swapped over (in a clean environment). But you will need the donor drive to be as close a match the original drive - as in the serial numbers being close, not just the same make and model. I've used Kingdom Data Recovery in Scotland - it's a couple of hundred for a successful recovery, if you have a donor drive.
If it's platter related, you could be looking at spending thousands.

I suspect Steffi (as in Graf) because the "ph" digraph is uncommon.
-
• #74382
Yes, it's usually "Steffi".

Yes, as in how you spell the abriviation. I thought it was with an i.
Cheers.

I was thinking of going to the seaside tomorrow, somewhere in Essex. Scenery and a nice coastal walk a must, fish and chips optional.
Mersea Island, Walton-on-the-Naze, Clacton, somewhere else?

Clacton and Mersea are nice enough. The former for a more traditional fish and chips by the sea jobbie. Mersea is a bit barren and dog walker inhabited.
But tbh I would go a few minutes down the road to Frinton instead. Shits all over Clacton.

You spell that 'abbreviation'. :)

Do you know much about it's shiftpoint. Sram acquired Sachs hence the automatix. But users hated the shift point. There are hacks to up the RPM crossover point [links below]. Was the shift point ever an issue for the Torpedo?

I'm currently putting together a Pinarello Banesto. I thought it took a 27.2 seatpost, but it seems a bit smaller (maybe 27.0 or 26.8 at a guess). I've trawled the interwebz, but I'm still no wiser. Does anyone know what size post it takes? Thanks!

i reckon your lbs has a stepped thingy (basically a stepped rod with different diameters simulating seatpostdiameters) with which you can measure the seatpost diameter?
-
• #74391
also, you could google the tubing + seatpost diameter instead of searching for the frame make?

How might I go about removing a hollowtech 2 BB from my old bike? It's had about 4 years daily commuting use and is the original one that came with the bike (alu frame). I'm trying to sort the bike out for my brother but this has stumped me.
I tried with a cheap ebay BB spanner but it didn't shift at all. Then I bought a lezyne BB tool.
All this has done is start to round off the spline things on the BB and break a ratchet spanner thing.
What next?

The tubing is Pinarello Event ... this is a heat treated tube set made by Dedacciai especially for Pinarello. I still can't find anything on the web.
Maybe your suggestion of the LBS stepped thingy will be my next move.

You're better off taking it to a reputable LBS that have all the necessary tools to removed bottom bracket.
Unless you think the £15 labour is prohibitively expensive.
-
• #74395
If you are turning it the right way and are going to replace the bearings, one of these
-
• #74396
What are the necessary tools? I'm not averse to paying for someone to do it if I have to, but generally prefer to do these sorts of things myself.

This was to me?
Not sure about the shift point on the older Torpedos, I've only tried out friends' bikes.
Sorry - also, just back from work which is why the delayed reply. -

I seem to remember that you used to be able to get cheap, last-minute long-haul flights if you were flying without luggage. Is this still a thing or has it stopped?
-
• #74399
You seem to have the tools but ended up posting which is why you pay £15...
You might have the wrong splined tool, I can't remember which is which.

Nah the tool's for a hollowtech 2 BB, it's a 5700 105 BB. Pretty sure it's the right tool? It's just really firmly stuck. What would an LBS do?
What are good non clip in pedals that will take a row strap for my cross bike?
